Hello I have a borg warner rear end without any trouble but Just in case I'can't figure how to remove the rear axle.It's different from my previous 84 rear end .

Just a safety thing, DO NOT REMOVE THE TORQUE ARM IF YOU JACKED UP FROM THE REAR END. I did this on my car, to remove all the stuff before unbolting the rear end cuz i could get the car higher this way. I was going to relocate the stands after doing this, but the torque arm bolts were a bear to get out. I realized what was happening as i was loosening the last bolt, and got the hell out of there.

The axle wants to shift if its not bolted to the torque arm, so if the car is resting on a rigid frame, front wheels and rear axle, and you remove the support in between that makes it rigid, you have a gear head sandwich!

It works like about any other non-C-clip rear....

Unbolt the brake backing plate, which acts as the retainer; and use a slide hammer on the axle. The bearing is pressed onto the axle and slides out with it.

alss with this kind of system I think the axles bearings must be easier to change than on a GM rear end .

You could improvise something, but slide hammers are readily available to rent or buy.

I know i didn't have to use a slide hammer. Open up the case, take out that 3/8 bolt, knock the pin through, push axle in, remove c-clip, pull axle out.

I had my calipers/rotors already off. But i never used a slide hammer.

for Borg Warner 9-bolt 7.75" rear end, slide hammer is required for axle removal. makes it a very simple task.

axle bearing replacement (or axle seal replacement) is a whole nother story. not very easy. I thoroughly exercised my 20-ton hydraulic press when I did mine.

Ok, thanks for the info. I was wondering what the best way replace the axle bearing would be, the guy who sold me the car told me i had to heat up the axle and pop the bearing out or something like that. Also how do I know if I have a Borg Warner rear-end?

the Borg Warner 9-bolt rear axle has a 9 bolt differential cover. nine bolts. unique.

I recall that it also has the words "Borg Warner" cast into the bottom rear edge. if you ever have the rear end jacked up and you're under there, very easy to see, but counting the bolts on the cover is even easier.

I think using heat to get the bearing off, too risky, you might adversely affect the axle heat treatment when wielding the torch and not getting desired results. in any event, you'd have to heat up the bearing retainer sleeve, not the axle. to get the bearing retainer sleeve to expand. I think the hydraulic press is mandatory for that task.

So I went and checked, and I have a 10-bolt. Is there anything different I need to do to remove the axle?

Yes, then you need to take the cover off, remove the cross pin, push the axles in, remove the C clips, then pull the axles out.

Texas, the 9 bolts were only used in '87-89 or so. You do indeed have the "normal" 10 bolt.
DO NOT use heat on your rear end for anything. Use a slide hammer to remove the axle seals and bearings, I rented one for free. Took out each roller bearing one at a time, then finally the case
Then hammer them in with a 2x4 and a rubber mallet. A BIG mallet.

Thanks for the info, are you sure about the 2x4 and big mallet Sounds a little risky to me, but then again I am the one who asked about heating it up the axle

oh yea, that's THE way to do it. The 2x4 spreads the force over the seal area. Whatever you do, DO NOT tap it in around the circle, that guarantees a leak.

The bearing just pushes in with your hand, the seal is what holds it all in there.
I did this over the winter, it's one of few places on my car that DOESN'T leak.

Do a search on "axle bearings", you should find a schwack of threads where sofakingdom tells his method of how to re/re those bearings. The replacement is the aforementioned way.
