Engine Compartment Temp
Engine Compartment Temp
I own a 88 Trans Am GTA and, as you all probably know, it gets pretty damn hot in the engine compartment over long trips, especially in the summer. Is there anything you can do to get some extra air circulating under there? Any opinions are great!

try removing the rubber seal along the back of the hood, thats a high pressure area and you'll get a lot of cool air in there...

What do you care about the air in the engine department conditions? If it the air for the engine go to a cold air setup.
But a popular technique I know of are ceramic coat or wrap the headers with some sort of insulator.
Of course the radiator is supplying all the hot air that your engine doesnt need. Cowls are nice, scoops are better. But, what are you wanting to cool off?

I'm looking to get some cooler air inside the engine compartment, only because I personally don't like it being so damn hot under there. (Please don't be such a wise guy when replying BTW).
PS. Why would you want to be a panzie a** in the first place?

well read ALL his sig. and it makes since.
Buy some ceramic coated headers, put in a 160* therm. get a cat back so the exhaust flows better.

After I installed my coated headers most of the engine compartment heat was gone, just something to consider.

I'd leave that rubber under the rear hood. Water on top of your distributor is not a good thing. Perhaps get a cowl hood, let the heat escape out the back, high pressure area.

what about removing the under hood insulation? since the stock hoods have the vents in them. might alow for a little more air flow

Wise guy? Me?
Well I was going to tell you about this company that I found called Swain Technologies (www.swaintech.com). They are way to expensive and are for race engines, but I like the idea of an engine not needing to radiate any heat, what so ever.
Oh well, no appreciation.

Hmmm....won't radiate ANY heat? You must have discovered the perfect engine insulators and coatings that convert all energy from combustion into work and remove frictional losses entirely.
These coatings will REDUCE the amount of heat from combustion lost and improve the efficiency of an engine, but not eliminate it. The engine will still dissipate some heat. No doubt, however, the difference is noticeable.

ok what i did was remove the slot cover on the back of my hood 89 formula then put in 160 temp thermostat. then put a by pass on my fans where they stay running when the ignition is in the on position.
hottest temps under hard hard running conditions and then sitting for a while 190 most of the time it stays alittle over 160 the car used to run at 220 constantly and then after the motor work it would run around 240 ouch... but all this stuff fixed it great. the fans made the biggest difference though but all tegether make for one cool running motor....

Find your fan temp sensor on the lower right of the engine down near the 3 sparkplug back. Easier to get to from underneath the car. Splice a wire into that switch's wire and run it into the passenger compartment. Hook that wire to a on/off rocker type switch. Now ground the other terminal of the new on/off rocker switch to the body. Somewhere under the dash. Now you have control over one of your fans. You can turn it on whenever you want. I leave mine on all the time when its warm outside.

yea you can hook up a switch if you want that would be best in the winter but in Texas it never really gets cold so i went the cheesy way and just jumperd the power wire for the over to the switched wire so as long as the ignition wire has power the fans are on its the easyest way. but not the best way a switch is the better way.
