2.8L/TPI air box install on a 3.1L and freshly washed pics
I finally got rid of the crappy 3.1L air box and installed one from the 2.8L and TPI cars. I got lucky at the junk yard and found an 85 2.8L and the box wasn't cracked or anything and I got it for $9! My original plan to install it was to go to Auto Zone and get 2 the red intake couplers and some 3" exhaust pipe and replace the hose piece that goes to the throttlebody but when I went to measure I noticed some tube coming off the air hose into the valve cover so I had to leave it and if I still had the MAF I would have been set but I didn't buy the MAF since my engine doesn't need it would look ugly. I ended up buying a small 3" exhaust coupler, one of the red rubber intake couplers, and a 4.5" clamp. I spent a lot of time cleaning it up since it was filthy, but baby oil brought back a nice shine. I painted the exhaust tube flat black since half the black and half silver wouldn't look good. I had to stretch the 3" coupler over the hole in the air box and use the 4.5" clamp on that and then the exhaust tube was the perfect length to connect the coupler to the stock hose to the throttlebody.

I washed her up today to get rid of all the pollen and I went and took a bunch of pictures and only 3 turned out since there wasn't much light.

If you ever start detailing out the engine compartment, you should take a file and hit all those lines on the upper plenum, then sand and polish just those lines.... I did that on my old 2.8 and it looks really nice. I also replaced the upper plenum bolts with chrome button heads... that looked good too.
