Re: WooHoo! I got my first Thirdgen

My future plans for htis car include:

Full suspension: KYB shocks, LCA, panhard rod, torque arm, SFC's, Tower and Lower Brace. (And learn what it does exactly, whehehe :P)

Engine - Learn to program the ecm, some form of power adder, ram air tubing, set of headers, Battery relocation to trunk.

Some bodywork - Cracked paint on bumpers, small rustbubbles on 3 places and sheetrust on the drivers door.

New locks - I only have 1 set of keys, none for the t-top, and the seller knows the person who probably has the other set of keys :S

Detailing - New Grille, Nose Emblem, seatbelts, airdam, headliner, Rpm and Temp gauges, rearview mirror, new seat recliners.

Re: WooHoo! I got my first Thirdgen

for your overheating issue...check the thermostat since you said the rad was cold.

looks like a good staring point to restore...didnt seem to shake/shimmy while on the freeway.

gotta ask though, does the car have a v6 tachometer in it? its reading awful high.

Re: WooHoo! I got my first Thirdgen

Well @ 65 mph, it shakes, so i'll have the weels balanced. I didnt want to go all out before my mechanic can have a look at it. I'll open her up on the autobahn next week

Good luck, looks like a nice car. As for the overheating, do you guys have water wetter in the Netherlands

Seriously though, can you tell where the coolant is leaking from? It could be something simple like a cracked or dryrotted hose.

Congrats on the car! You're going to love it, and it seems like you do indeed have a fully loaded Z28. Good find.
I just got my first Iroc, but 2nd 3rd gen. Mine needs a lot of work, but I'm very pleased with it so far. I can't wait to get it done and really take it for a drive.
Be sure to post pics and keep us updated!

If your thirdgen can only do 80mph, you've got serious problems.

We probably have something similar. I'll have the car transposted to the garage, I don't want to risk damaging the engine. Moderndaymuscle will provide me with a replacement in-dash-temp gauge.

Seems low, I'll install a corvette Kickdown kit if it revs to high.

I'll take a special drivers course in the summer, to learn how to control over/understeer, aquaplaning and slipping. And the f-body enthousiasts here in the Netherlands orginize drifting courses and trackdays. (www.f-body.nl)

Looks like your airdam is missing. That's probably what's causing your overheating problem.

Re: WooHoo! I got my first Thirdgen

That looks real good. Your car closely resembles my car from the option code list. Are you gonna put the gold wheels and decals back on it? Your thermostat goes under the water neck which is on the front of the intake manifold. Just pull off your upper radiator hose, remove the water neck and put the new thermostat in. Put a new gasket or silicone on the water neck, put water neck back on, attach rad. hose and it is done.

Re: WooHoo! I got my first Thirdgen

Yup thermostat under the throttle body, kinda a pain to change. Sounds like thats the problem. Yea id put the iroc stripes back on! ill post some pics of my 86 tomaro, its has the silver stripes. I will never change them or take them off. Mine also has its 20 year old pant still on it, Not perfect but its not bad ither, people give it a 90% our ot 100%, and the car still wins car shows.
Mine wasnt that clean when i got it, but with a little time and of course $ its can be very ncie very fast. All the parts on that car you can literaly restore. I restored my fog lights, dash guages, center council lid, head liner, front marker lights. My car hast he suspension you want to get on yours. You will love it!

The IROC Rims will stay. And I like plain black cars, no chrome no logo's. I actually considered removing my original mint TPI and z28 badges. But I decided against it :P

Thnx for the thermostat info. I'll pick one up at my garage and see if it improves. I hate to way till tuesday and then tow the car to the shop for a checkup...

Minus the mudflaps, pinstriping and nice exhaust they look alike. Even the interior matches. Mine was built #185021 in the Norwoord plant, registered 28'th of February 1986.
Too bad you have the car for sale, of are you keeping it?

What exactly did you do to your suspension? I checked UMI and Spohn's website, umi is a bit cheaper and had the strut tower brace but not the sway bars like Spohn... I guess Shipping charges to the Netherlands will be a b*ch.

Who are you kidding with that?!?!

Only problem with the automatic thirdgens and going for top speed is it won't shift into OD at WOT unless you have a modified kick down valve, even so, you can still get past 120, even at only half throttle, as to stay in 4th gear.

85mph? a good moped could pass you! And Jim knows what he's talking about. When my 91 Z28 350 was stock (with trans work) it would peg the 145 mph speedo and rev 400 more rpm's.............I couldn't handle a 80mph car.

Thanks.
Right now there are about 5 firebird and 10 camaro's for sale, on the biggest car site. One car has a tpi engine, the rest is carbed and about 50% has the 2.8 litre (smallest) v6. Prices are twice as high as I paid, condition is many times worse. There is one black trans am with a broken engine, it's 25% more expensive than what I paid for my camaro. Go figure. If I sell my car today I will make at least a 100% profit. But I will keep her. It is my dreamcar

Nice setup! Why did you go Spohn and not UMI?

Where are you from? If you're from the USA it must not be too hard to find a decent thirdgen. Just keep looking, I waited about three years for this one. I'm keeping my fingers crossed when my mechanic will inspect it on tuesday. Lots of salt and rain here!

Umi are pretty much the same thing, but i got a group deal with spohn so i went that rout, it was not cheap. Umi do the same if not better, i have friends with umi components. There just as good.

Re: WooHoo! I got my first Thirdgen

Again, there is something to be said about cruising a thrid gen in Europe. Not a common site to be sure but one that makes a statement. What that statement is, I'm not exactly sure.

Netherlands! I got family in Friesland and Abcoude.

Re: WooHoo! I got my first Thirdgen

very nice car. good find!

although i dont think its an iroc. the bumper badge reads z28 and it should say iroc-z. it also looks like its sitting a little high for an iroc. i dont see the iroc package in your RPO codes either.

can someone prove me wrong on this?

Re: WooHoo! I got my first Thirdgen

Z28 + G80 (posi) + GU5 (3.23) + FE2 (stage 2 handling) + J65 (4 wheel discs) = one hell of a ride.
Would be nice to know if it's an Iroc, I just assumed so because it was is the ad + on the dash. :S

Wasn't the IROC an upgrade option for that year?

Re: WooHoo! I got my first Thirdgen

i believe the iroc was a package that included most all of what your car has but a lot of the iroc options were also cosmetic. im pretty sure it had its own RPO code though. do a search, it should be easy to find.

one way or another, your car is pretty well stacked. TPI, 4 wheel discs, suspension....you have all of the important stuff the iroc had anyway. the only difference if you have a Z28 is you wont have the quick ratio steering box. my buddy has an 85 Z28 and his steering is a little bit wider than mine. not a huge difference though...

Re: WooHoo! I got my first Thirdgen

I believe the RPO code for an IROC is B4Z and you car has RPO Z28 so your car is definately a Z28. But like others have stated, with all the options that car has that's absolutly nothing to sweat, especially since you're in Europe.

Maybe the first owner wanted a stock look but with IROC performance...

I can't wait to get her on the street and tear all ricers here a new one. Every kid here has a VW golf TDI, Honda Something or Seat Ibiza. Older people drive toyota avensis, audi a4, opel vectra or ford escort. Boring cars if you ask me...

Ocasionally you see some porsches, BMW z4, Audi RS4, BMW Mini's or Mazda MX5's. A kid at my University has a lowered Honda s2000, only decent looking car around here for miles

Re: WooHoo! I got my first Thirdgen

the only thing youre missing is a door decal and the body stripes. you basically have an iroc man! you may want to look into swapping that steering box for the 2.25 ratio iroc one though. you should be able to pick one up cheap at a junkyard. its not a night and day difference but it does tighten up your steering noticeably!

what the hell is a Seat Ibiza? whatever it is, it sounds lame!
