wetsanding
wetsanding
ok getting the car painted wednesday, starting of it anyways, and i asked him if he was gonna wetsand it, and he said NO. i asked him why not.
and he said because that is not how it came from the factory, and if he does it will have a mirror shine and show any imperfections at all, and he doesnt like it like that.
he said it will look just as good without, and it will look a mile deep anyways,
should i believe him or make him wetsand it, i dont want it done if i wont like it.
what do you guys think. please tell me the ups and downs of this.
and i am going to use Zaino, if that matters!!

of the 5 cars i have painted/assisted we have always wetsanded. my brothers car wasnt wetsanded and it didnt look anywhere near as clean.clear as mine was. what color are you painting it? of course they werent wet saneded from the factory, they would still be painting them if they did that
. wetsanding= nicer looking car IMO. i havent heard of a show car that wasnt wetsanded because thats how the pros do it, and it results in better quality. i would ask him to wet sand it if it were my car.

I would have it wet sanded also. Any car, whether it has imperfections or not, looks better wet sanded. I personally have never done this, but I have never painted a car either. When I do have/paint my car, it will be wet sanded.

Makes me wonder if he wasn't planning on putting on enough clearcoat to allow for wet sanding. You need enough paint on there so you don't sand through into the basecoat. Something to consider.

HE HAS GOT TO WET SAND YOUR CAR. THE DIFFERENCE IS HUGH. AND THE THING ABOUT THE DEALER IS B.S. THEY DON'T SEND CARS OUT WITH PAINT INPERFECTIONS. TAKE A LOOK AT MY CAR AFTER BEING WET SANDED. THE COMPLIMENTS ON THE STREET NEVER STOP COMING.

i am guessing that i should make him wetsand it. oh well i will find out tonight at 5 or so, when i take the car to him.
thanks guys.

Wetsanding will remove any uneven clearcoat applications. It also removes "orangepeel" which is basically uneven clearcoat. Most painters use a special downdraft paint booth to keep dust off the surface during paint, but some still gets on the surface. Wetsanding smooths those areas out and will give you a smooth shine if done correctly. You should never spend money on a good paint job and not get it wetsanded also. That will give it the finishing touch. A lot of people will take a brand new car and wetsand it to get a cleaner, smoother shine, because the factory didn't!!

well i take it to him in a few hours, and i just got done talking to him, he said he normally wetsands the cars a little to get and dust or debri out of the clear, but he doesnt go to the extent of the $50 thousand dollar show car. he just doesnt like it that smooth, he likes a tiny amount of texture, and he said that after the car is all done, then i can come down and see if i like it, and if i dont then he will go ahead and wetsand it, but it will cost me more, how much, i didnt ask.
and he is gonna wetsand it before the paint is sprayed so it lays better, he has done this for 17 years so i trust him, but hey everyone is different. thanks everyone. i will post a bunch of pics when i am done!

My father has 25+ years of painting/bodywork experience,i also do auto body, wetsanding is good to do after you paint a car, that way the orange peel and imperfections are gone,on my friends new Z-06 he had it wetsanded and it made a difference and that is on a new vette,my car was wetsanded before and after being painted, you can check out my picks in my sig, they cant really show alot of detail as they are pics but you get the idea.

When you wetsand you take some fine sandpaper and a bucket of water, make sure to keep the sandpaper really wet and rinse repeatadly, you also want to have the hose handy to keep the surface of the car wet,i just hold the hose over the part that i am sanding and sand nice, smooth, and slow, the results are noticeable and worth the effort if your car goes to car shows often,it removes any dust or orange peel affect that you get from clear coat or if a gun spits, dust is the biggest enemy and you will always get a little it seems.

4 coats of clear should be sufficient. Leaving texture only helps hide imperfections, but a good wetsanding job will make your car look like a mirror, especially with Zaino. If your car is very straight then definately wetsand!
I would have to agree with those that say wetsanding is a must after a fresh paint job.It brings out more shine from the car and eliminates any dirt that may fall onto the paint during spraying. My dad also has been painting cars for 20+years and i love working on cars.It will be more to have it wetsanded because it is a pain in the a** to be with the bucket of water and sanding the whole car.Good luck and post pics when you can
ok guys, its there. its finally there. i am so happy.

i painted mine and wetsanded it. took dam near two weeks cuz i lagged alot. i used 1500 grit and a hose that i clamped to wherever that let out a trickle of water on the area sanded. i must say, i was defenetly worth the xtra time. its fairly straightforward. go to orchard supply or the local hardware store and buy some 3m FINE grit sand paper, remeber the higher the grit, the finer the paper, thus the longer it takes to sand.
good luck!
