Re: post pics of shaved or smooth engine bays.

Not mine and not the best angle to see the engine bay. I saw this at the All Camaro and Chevy Show last month in Issaquah, WA. Everything on the fenders is covered and he has some access plates overflow and washer reservoirs, etc.

That looks real good. You should put the battery in the trunk. One less thing under the hood.

Re: post pics of shaved or smooth engine bays.

Some of you guys went much further in smoothing than I did with mine, but why didn't you guys smooth the inner fenders like mine too? I'm not trying to sound like a jerk because yours are great and you smoothed things that I didn't even touch, but to me the inner fender bumps for mounting the coolant and washer fluid bottles are the most in-your-face areas to smooth. You see them a lot more than the battery trays or frame rails.

True. But I personaly didnt like thoes smoothed out, it was just a little to custom for me at the time. I wanted mine to look factory, like if GM made a heater delete car. Thats why also if you notice i left the factory seam that goes across the firewall. And the only reason at the time I smoothed out the battery tray seams is because the other one was rotted out and I hade to weld in another one from another car. But Im glad I did it cause it looks good.

Pics of bat tray.

Yeah I want to, But I just didnt want to deal with routing it back there, I was to excited to start the motor. But it will end up in the spare tire well.

Re: post pics of shaved or smooth engine bays.

wow, that battery tray was pretty toasted. I did notice the continuation of the factory seam on the firewall and that's a nice touch. It's all personal opionion, but I think yours would look absolutely perfect with the inner fenders smoothed too. GM would never make a no-heat car, but they could easily make one with washer and coolant bottles mounted somewhere other than the fenders :-)

Re: post pics of shaved or smooth engine bays.

That's a carbon fiber nascar box, probably from ebay. You can buy them new from deBotech and other composite shops. They are available in 16 and 14" filter setups. Most on ebay are painted and modified for a tube (starter fluid) and some kind of cowl hook up.

This is what it looks like if you buy it brand new (without the decals)

BTW, I want to see a shaved/clean bay w/ FI. Swapping a carb is cheating

Hey Rayzor32, The true cowl inducted air filter box i use is fully fuctional unlike the one in the pic that Twin-turbo submitted thats pictured on the Corvette, its just for looks and only draws under hood heated air. I purchased it from J.C. Chamber's Enterprises, yes it is a Ex-nascar version but it was unused(new).

Re: post pics of shaved or smooth engine bays.

Who said it's only for looks? Mine hooks up to an opening in the hood, draws cold air from the windshield area.
Chambers sells a lot of nascar take offs. A much better deal than getting it straight from Hans de Bot. I would get it from ebay also, especially if someone is selling a new one.

very slick, love the titanium header wrap too (I'm getting that also the next time instead of gray or black) Sure helps not having to have a heater or wiper motor & washer (we do here)

The wiper motor can still go on there but I figured since I didnt ahve heat or any of the HVAC stuff what was the point lol Ill just rainX the windshield like all the other street rods in the area just in case I get caught in some rain. Im going to make a carbon fiber plate to cover the big wiper access area on the cowl.

Hey you all have some bad *** bays! I really like the way it looks w/o the Vac booster. I also like FueledSoul's idea with the painted vac (looks like it's not even there)

Just started mine. Shaved the handles, keyhole, hood emblem, side skirts, rear bumper emblem, and firewall. I'm also going with remote coolant overflow and no wiper fluid... Smoothing the inner finders too. Like others, I had to get a new battery tray.

Re: post pics of shaved or smooth engine bays.

Noob Question....
The Upper Strut Mounts sit on what looks to me like some sort of cover. Can this be taken off? If not, can the seams be filled with body filler to make it look smooth?

krzyz's car looks as if they are not there... anyone??

These look like the stock strut tower mounts... are they painted (mine are black)?
Also, what brand of paint did you spray the bay with? did you spray it? any problems with holding up to the heat?

are you guys just using body filler to fill in all the lines and gaps, or is it a fiberglass based filler?

I used a product called "evercoat" worked great. Yes it is fiberglass based filler.
There are other great products out there too. With proper application, they all work nice.... The old school Bondo is cool too, but it drys too hard, the slightest flex can make it crack.

I got my question answsered, found it in another thread. Looks like the seams have been TIG welded, then feathered down with a grinder (to get rid of those ugly ripples).

Here is a pic from another thread. I really like the "seamless" look.

Just try whatever you can get your hands off. If it gets bad, you could always sand it all off then do it again... that's how it happened for me anyway...

The firewall is not the "stiffest" piece of sheet metal, so I went with a flexible filler.

OMG! you smoothed the battery tray's too.
I'm vary interested. What did you use to smooth everything out? was it just body filler?
Did you do any welding? Did you cut the bumps of the top of the inner fenders?

Re: post pics of shaved or smooth engine bays.

Another question,
When you guys have the inner fenders smoothed, are you cutting all tlhe bumps off and welding sheet metal over the cut out (making patches)? Are you hammering them in? What did everyone do to get them they way they are??
