i think it would take alot of work since if you keep the button pushed in all the time the key will not turn completly off so if your key dont come out till there then you dont get key out and it wont shift into gears with it up all the time id think you would have to go into the colum somhow

edit but just thinking those b&m shifters have it so you dont have to push a button anymore so i dunno

Just take your console apart and see how the shift lever works. The button pushes down a detent that allows it to go into certain gears, and protects it from going into others. Disable that and you can do whatever you want. Like now being able to accidently throw your car into reverse/park doing 65 mph. But hey atleast your shift **** will look cool. I'm sure the tow truck guy will be impressed.

Buy an aftermarket shifter and you won't have to worry about the button or going into reverse at 65 somehow.

well for one im not exactly sure how you could accidently throw it into reverse going 65 cause i sure aint shifting or even touching the shifter when driving unless i have to but i do see your point i guess it could happen also i might just buy a b&m or hurst and get a pistol grip

I've actually put the car in reverse while driving 65. I could have sworn that I left it in Drive and not Overdrive (since most the time it's in drive because it searches for the right gear in overdrive in the city)... so I pushed it up twice to get into Neutral so I could coast for a while (it was going down hill for about a mile and a half, figured coasting was a good idea).

So I stuck my finger down, shifted up two and *CLUNK* the car turned itself off. I realized what I had done just before I put it into reverse, but it was too late by then.

That was SCARY. I am now trying to figure out how to relocate my shifter w/o getting rid of any of the functionality, or safety taht there is in the original design which possibly saved my life that day.

(I'm trying to relocate it so I can use the auto console for 4th gens ).

threw a blazer into reverse at 72 on cruise control. scared the crap out of me!!!! I bumped the shift lever up while I was changeing the radio. the truck started to slide sideways but I caught it and then the ECM killed the motor. was able to get into N and roll off the road, but I was lucky. don't make it easier to do that. you will regret it very much. get an aftermarket shifter for your safety and everyone else around you.

ive put a car in reverse while going about 30-35 (accidental of course) and all that happened was a small grind and the motor just shut off...no real damage

people grind gears all the time in manuals so i wouldnt be worried about it doing it once

im sure its not GOOD or anything but nothing like u need a new tranny if u do it accidentally.

hehe, i gots a funny story. Guy I worked with was having trouble w/ the tranny in a blazer he had leased. Well a tranny shop worked on it and they thought they had the problem fixed (i think it wouldnt go into OD or something). So they're out testing it out, first time they get going fast enough to go into OD, the thing goes into OD, and then shifts again, right into reverse. I dont know if the ECM shut the engine off or what happened, but i know it didnt happen fast enough for some reason b/c the tranny was totally destroyed, he wound up getting a new tranny outta the whole ordeal.

but yea, go aftermarket, i think they look better.

The hurst Dual/gate is the shifter of choice when looking to eliminate the button (imo). But here's another idea, they say they are for 4th gens, but someone here must know if the regular shift ***** are compatible, if so, we must assume that these shifter ***** will fit as well... --John

These shifter ***** can be found at www.mbaproducts.com

My hurst dual/gate pics are at my site: www.coolcamaro.cz28.com

I'm going to bump and old thread here, but everything I've read, is that this is for 4th gen's only...unless the auto shifter for the 3rd and 4th gen's is the same. Then there is no reason why it wouldn't work. I'm looking to do this in mine this year sometime.
