Cheap Cupholder

I have been struggling without a cupholder for to long now. Not any more. After trying unsuccessfully to find an actual sunk in cup holder, I stumbled accross this at work. It fit perfectly and I think it looks pretty good. What is it you ask. It's a $2 pencil holder from Staples. Big enough for 20 oz. bottles and deep enough that it's not in the way.

Dude, thats actually pretty cool...

You should also hook up an LED through the bottom so that it would illuminate a bottle of mountain dew or something...
now that would be cool!

Maybe I'll try that. Did you drill that out or cut it out?

I have the exact same pencil holder sitting on my desk right now! It might not be there for long. I don't want to risk messing my console up so how did you do yours?

COPYCAT! nah just playing. i did this exact thing about a year ago.i dont have power hatch or windows so it worked out great. i paid more than $2 though. i didnt like that it could be pulled out, so i pulled up the shift panel thing and zip-tied a coozy around it (had to cut the coozy to fit). this made it a little more secure and keeps it from wiggling. the size is cool, because my liter-sized aquafina bottles fit in it. good work man!!!

forgot to give install tips. when i was looking for something that would work i was looking for a lip at the top. this has probably 1/4 inch lip all the way around. mine was a little tapered at the bottom which helped after i cut the hole. i just measured, found center of console. i used a drill and a jigsaw. the metal mesch actually helped me round it out after the hole was cut. once i got it were it would almost fit i just twisted until i dropped, makes for a tight fit. good luck. and highly recommended.

The only thing I can see a problem with the mesh thing is that the dew from what ever is in the holder may get some of the elctronics wet underneth it. Ofcourse this is just a what if. But if you add a coozy to it like dan_o_89_rs did, it would fix that problem and keep the drink cold longer also. I think I might try this out. Ecspicaly if I can fit a 20oz in there. Adam :-)

if you guys are looking to do this use a hole saw to cut the hole.

sweet! I was thinking about this very thing...only, in my case, I'd have to relocate the power window and power mirror controls up a little to make room.

Was it an easy modification? Any pitfalls I should watch out for?

I'm thinking that as many console pieces as are available on e-bay, you could buy one cheap to modify, and keep your good one in case when/if you have to sell so you could return it to stock. Cool mod.

I used the bottom of the holder and drew a pencil line around it on the console. Then got out my rotozip to cut it. I also wrapped it with a piece of felt to absorb any moisure and glued it down using some rubber and trim adhesive.

Something I have at home that would work is the cup that's used in a dice game, whats that game called?

anyways, it's lether, has no holes, and is pretty solid, big enough to use as a cupholder.

I got mine for 1$
