91 RS Steering Column Question
My 16 year old son just bought a 91 RS Camaro for his 1st car . It has tilt wheel. The steering column seems to have some play in it as I noticed it by holding on and pushing down on the wheel getting in and out of the car. It goes down and left. I have since looked at several of these same year cars in junkyards and car lots, they all seem to do the same thing. This one seems a little worse than most of the others I have checked. Does anyone know anything about this? Take it in or do it yourself? I don't wanna see the airbag! We can't drive it yet untill He gets license plate, drivers license and insurance. He spent his funds on the car and some other things to fix it up. I'll be a good Dad and wrench on it with but he pays for parts. Any help will be appreciated.

I am currently doing this fix right now. My best advice is to search this site far and wide. There are tons of articles on this. I have prolly read about 50 articles on this repair. there is a article in the tech section as well at the home page
Unfortunately I stripped one of the bolts that you must tighten in the column. there are 4 inverse torx screws that tend to loosen up over time. Now I must fix that before putting it back together.
My best advice: be very patient and take your time, especially if it's your first time like it was mine.
Good luck!
PS: welcome to the boards.

If you've got an Autozone nearby they will loan you the wheel puller and lock plate depressor.

This problem with tilting down and left seems to be common in the early 90s years.. I sent my column out and had it rebuilt.. My 4 torx bolts (which werent even torx bolts on my year) was not the problem causing the wheel to tilt down/left.. I think the guy said it was something with the housings worn out.. I think where the pivot pins go in.. Cost a small fortune to have rebuilt but it doesnt tilt anymore..

Uh oh......i hope what slayer6669 was talking about isnt what is wrong with mine. I have spent way too much time on it to have it be another problem!
Slayer6669: Out of curiosity, how much did it cost to have it rebuilt??? And did you just take it to a dealership?

one thing to check before you yank the colum. undernieth the dash ar two 15MM nuts that holt the colum tight to the dash, make sure they are tight, also check then two 10MM nuts @ the firewall. it will move if they are loose.
