OK guys, I think I am going through what every person who starts a project is.

Getting to the point where I am sick of it sitting in my garage, I just want it done and there doesnt seem to be enough time to get it there...

I need some inspiration

I have been working on this now for over 2 years, just getting burnt out.

Contemplated selling the car, but everyone wants you to give it away, and I would rather light it on fire in my back yard first.... which leaves me to continuing down the road to finishing her.

Re: I need some inspirational thoughts
I know the feeling all too well. I've been there a few times with mine. LOL it seems I either get all excited or completely frustrated when I work on it now. depends on the progress for the day. I get hung up so many stupid things that set me back or waste the day running to the store to buy a tool, or part.

If you have to, take a short break from it. Go back and look at pictures to see what you have gotten done so far.

I checked out your page and your car is quite a bit like mine. I haven't really updated my website on the car in awhile but I really need to.
I am just about to the point where I can drive her down tot he local garage for the alignment and then to my brother in law to weld in the subframe connectors and exhaust.

here's the link for my car - http://iroc.blk-wdw.com

Re: I need some inspirational thoughts
what needs to be done to the car? i know the feeling as well as the both of you do...i have an 87 t/a, garage kept for the first 1/3rd of her life, so the paint was peeling in certain spots, i got so sick of dreaming of painting it that one day in the winter i went out with a sharpie marker, i marked all the dents and dings, then i went back inside, and i came back with a grinder, i figured i'm committed now to fix it, otherwise i'll only be able to sell for about 200 lol, anyway, ive spent all summer on it, and i'm getting ready to finish it, it just takes time as well as anything else does, just spend a few minutes on it here and there, i know that it must be so rough to look at it in your garage and not be able to drive it or look at it and imagine your dreams, but youve gotta just do a little here and a little there, figure if you spend 2 hours a night on her, she'll be nice in no time (yeah, try spending only 2 hours, its never just 2 hours!)
i hope this helps man

Re: I need some inspirational thoughts
Yeah, I actually had the car on the road and got to drive it some. It was coming around but I need to swap the cam I think... it has been chewing dist. gears, and the only reason I can figure why is because of the cam...

so i figure if I have to do that, i might as well pull the motor and get the body work done.

That really was a hammer to my noggin as far as desire to work on the car.

I guess if I had more time to work on it, it would be better, but as it is it will be sitting now until late fall / winter.

I do love the car, and cant wait to get it done.... just gotta keep the nose to the grindstone.

Re: I need some inspirational thoughts
well my t/a is my daily driver, so in order to find any time to work on it with work and everything, it was tough, ive been working on this car since early spring, and just now i am getting to paint it, it sucked looking at it, but think of it this way, your building towards something you can really be proud of, not many people can go and brag about the work they did and how well it came out, itjust takes time and perseverance the last car show i was at, a gentleman had a 1970 firebird, said hes been working on it for 8 years, says every year he devotes 500 dollars for parts, and then works on it in the winter...he has a garage and i dont so thats why i dont use his idea, plus that wasnt his primary car either lol...but if you just get to it and spend some time on it, it'll get done in no time

Re: I need some inspirational thoughts
Well - like the rest of us in our projects, it seems totally "logical" to yank the motor because of the cam. But in our feeble brains, it means taking a step back instead of forward, which is a very sickening thought. I do this all the time myself. And it kills me, cause I want to do it right (well, right in the sense of Chip Foose). But that isn't a reality - that is TV fantasy, for most of us anyway.

Fact is, the cam job can be done on a Saturday - no motor pulling required. You just have to take out the radiator, and maybe do some pushing on the nose support brackets.

So do the cam job, leave the motor in. The body work can be done around the motor tomorrow, next week, next year. You just have to come to grips with the fact that, we all don't have a 30,000 sq ft warehouse, all the sponsor paid tools known to mankind, and 15 helpers that specialize in every aspect of the car. All we have is us, our hands, our limited tools, and our feeble brains.

But also, you have to remind yourself on a daily basis, that it's YOUR car, it's being built with YOUR tools, YOUR hands, and YOUR feeble brain - and when it's done, whenever, if ever that may be - it'll be all YOURS, YOUR art, and not some paid for pretty ride that any idiot with a larger paycheck can just go out and buy.

I love my 1992 Camaro RS. It looks like ****. It's not the fastest, it's not even fast by most standards on TGO. It's rusted, the windshield is cracked, it has Autozone seat covers, and the $30 carpeted dash cover. But it's a work in progress - MY ART! Under my carpet dash cover is a pristine uncracked pad. Under my Autozone seat covers are nice untorn matching 4th gen power seats. Under my rust is Bilsteins, Eibachs, and poly all around. My rust is getting sanded, and prepped for paint. My rims are getting all the casting marks sanded out smooth, and polished to shine like chrome.

And ya know what? I took MY ART to Carlisle, PA this year, to the GM National Car Show. And I very proudly parked it right in the middle of all the "perfect" cars. And some folks asked why my junker was there - and they were quickly asked where their Camaro was - they didn't have one at all! The Camaro owners all appreciated my art, and were insightful, and helpful.

And the "perfect cars" - look close enough at them, and you'll see that they are all, a work in progress. I looked close, and myself being the owner of "junk", I saw alot of stuff thrown together in ways I'd never settle for.

So, my Brother 3rd Genner ..... take your time, enjoy your work, and

TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR RIDE!!!!

OK - Enough of this warm fuzzy BS - get back to work!

Re: I need some inspirational thoughts
Stick with it, take a break from it and keep invisioning the finished product. Before I started my project, I actually had my car on eBay (didn't meet my reserve) but a guy was intersted in it and I didn't sell. I am glad I didn't since I am now making my car into something I have wanted for quite a while! So, be patient and persistent, when it's all said and done you'll be glad you didn't get rid of it! Good luck and happy wrenching!!!

Re: I need some inspirational thoughts
Thanks guys, I went out tonight and started pulling stuff apart. I feel good that I didnt sell the car, I do enjoy working on it, and now that I am pulling things apart for the second time, its almost 2nd nature...

I know I could do the cam with the motor in the car, but I do want to do some other things that I didnt get done when it was out last time. I think I will be happier in the long run.

Re: I need some inspirational thoughts
yup tryin to restore a car to varying degrees can quickly become a very money and time consuming task that never seems to have an end in sight. I had a 90 Bird that I wanted to restore. After the car fell in half 3 times(almost literally), and I had to keep welding it back together, I eventually gave up and got another 3rd gen. Now I have an 83 Trans Am that needs lots of work. The entire suspension was shot, engine was beyond shot, needs lots of body work, and a new paint job. But actually parking it and diving in seems to be an insurmountable task. My TA is a daily driver but I've made the decision that it wont be a winter car, so to allow some work time, I got another car for a daily driver, just a cheap crappy 93 Buick Skylark, nothing fancy, not fast, and also needing a small amount of work, but having another car is almost mandatory to restoring a car. Here in the next few weeks I will be pulling my LG4 305 pos out and cleaning up the engine bay, getting it prepped and repainted nice. Then if my pcm and wiring harness are back in time I'll be dropping in an LT1 engine. Two small things will be done, but thats all I can hope for this year. I wanted body work done and paint too, but due to life I am probably going to be moving mid project out of state and will lose my garage, my tools, and money. Wont even get to finish my college degree which only has a few credits left to get. Sometimes life gets in the way bigtime, but we have to press on, we gotta keep our eye on the goal, the finished product, because if not then everything is a waste. If you want things in life, you gotta stick to it, work toward your goal. How many of us got our dream job right in the beginning. Probably not many if any. We gotta work at it, and we have the same feelings about our career path as we do about our cars, we just want to give up and settle for whatever, but we stick with it knowing that in the end it all pays off. Just stick to it. Do a little at a time, and never give up.
