Where do I begin for exterior work. Kinda confused
So I bought my 1985 Camaro Iroc z28 a few months ago. Just now getting around to doing body work. (still have mechanical issues to work out).
Anyhow..
My right quarter panel needs to be replaced. Its dented/scratched you name it. So how do I go about fixing this?
I pretty much just buy a right quarter panel...get it painted.....then get it bolted/welded (w'e it is I don't know actually)
Sounds silly that I make this thread, seems kinda like common sense, but I'm looking at budget. What would be the cheapest way to go about doing this. All the body shops around my area wanna take a arm and a leg.

if you mean the rear quarter panel[not the front fender which bolts on]it has to be welded on and then bodyworked and then painted.try searching youtube.

Yes I mean the right rear quarter panel.
And damn that looks like its gonna cost a pretty penny. Also need to get the front fender replaced (though it doesn't look horrible, its just scratched up real bad).

any pics of the quarter? more damage can be repaired unless its really bad. replacing the entire quarter will be expensive.

Talk to people and get a line on a good local small-time bodyman. That can be worked out with a slide-hammer and then skimmed but the big shops will want your left n** to do it. Get a guy working on the side out of his shop and cut him a deal.
Just my two cents.

No need to replace the quarter....just some metal work and some mud work.

the quarter doesnt need to be replaced get a cheap slide hammer and a tub of bondo cost of 35 dollars and a coupe hours of work
Re: Where do I begin for exterior work. Kinda confused
The quarter is borderline IMO. The huge dent on the body line tells me to replace it, but a *good* bodyman *may* be able to reconstruct the body line. However, those deep creases tell me a different story.
I think it could be pretty presentable without being replaced, but to truly get it perfect it would need to be replaced. There is a NOS quarter panel for sale in the classifieds here currently (though I can't recall what side off-hand).

Re: Where do I begin for exterior work. Kinda confused
agreed, any one who suggests using a "tub" of bondo on a few dents doesn't know the first thing about body work. itll take a lot more than a slide hammer and bondo to fix that correctly.
since that huge dent actually runs right through the middle of the body line, and it looks like the quarter is actually punctured through near the wheel well opening, its gonna take a pretty experienced body man to salvage that quarter. not impossible, but not something a beginner is gonna get right. the dent is going to have to be pulled out, the puncture welded up, the creases hammered out, then many many hours of hammer and dolley work to shrink the metal back into shape. then more work to reconstruct the body line straight.

I disagree.. Thats not terrible at all, and if he does it correctly and more importantly takes his time it should come out just fine. It doesn't have any gaping rust holes and plus he can get at the fender from the inside because that's where the space saver spare tire goes. If you think that ones bad I'll trade dents with you. Mines at the fuel door which is waaay more reinforced than that side. You can see it in this picture
