sticky black sealant, what is it called? i need more
Guys im doing a rear deck lid swap, and between the rear glass and the deck lid, there is a sticky rubber/tar like sealant that helps seal the decklid to the glass. I had to remove the old stuff, but im searching and not finding what i need. The automotive stores think i need RTV but i keep telling them, thats not it.
Anyone know what its called and where to get it? im sure its also used on other parts of the car too.

This is what you should use. leave the silicone on your engine.
Its also sold in a lil box with about 10" strips but I couldnt find that real quick.
I bought a box of strips 15years ago and use the stuff all the time.. Have resealed about 7-9 rear hatches with it and countless other things.
There is also a adheisive backed foam that should be replaced but is prolly gone..
Make sure you put the sealer in a line just like the factory did so water wont sit inbetween the glass and decklid or drain into your hatch well area.

That caulking rope was not what was used on mine from the factory. 3M window weld from an applicator gun seems to be what was used. You'll need the window weld and a glass etch primer. Much easier to work with than the caulking rope anyway. To apply, cut a V groove in the spout so you apply a nice tall "comb" of adhesive on the glass.

My car also had urethane from the factory but I used the dum dum to replace it 15 years ago with great success. The dum dum is much easier to deal with for a at home do it your selfer 1st timer with not many tools.

In the U.S. federal law prohibits professional glass installers from installing ANY
auto glass with butyl ribbon that is not also bolted in. A bolted in glass is typically
a quarter glass. This means if they are replacing a windshield it will be a urethane
installation regardless of how it may have been "originally" done.
Now the "Frit Band", that is the black strip you see on late model windshields.
This band does what the clip-on "moldings" did on the older cars. It protects
the bead from sunlight and gives the windshield a cosmetically clean looking
installation. The newer cars no longer have the clip-on moldings so this
is the main reason for the Frit Band so the installation would not look like
SH** (as my glass man put it) as apposed to a clear glass installation with
no moldings.
Clip-on moldings will cover the bead .... but you can simply add
your own Frit Band by taping off the back of the glass and adding one using
Black Pinchweld Primer.

The pluses to Urethane vs. Butyl Ribbon.
1st and foremost is safety. (explains reason for Federal Law) The windshield
not only keeps wind out but is also to keep occupants IN...in the event of a
crash. An occupant not wearing their seat belt thrown into a glass held in by
butyl ribbon could easily find themselves and the windshield lying on the hood.
2nd with a proper urethane installation the glass is now a structural part of the
bird cage strengthening the car. Butyl ribbon can not offer this.

Correct again. I would never use the dum dum on a windshield esp since urethane came out!
On the rear decklid I don't really see much of a prob with it. The dum dum is covered by the deck lid and the deck lid is also held on with the the trim and 2 masive screws on each side.. lol
