Need help with loud hollow sound when closeing door!!
I have a 1984 Z 28 with only 11,600 miles and I am having a hard time listening to the obnoxious hollow sound when closing driver’s door. I removed the door panel and did not see anything obvious. The passenger side works perfect (just like a low mileage car should sound) The noise almost sounds like crash support that runs inside door may not be fasten properly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Frank

Put a sound deadening pad on the inside of the door skin. This is a common problem with doors that have been reskinned. You may want to check that there is something between the skin and reinforcement bar inside the door also. There is usually "blobs" of glue or sealer like material between the two. Not saying your door has been reskinned but if it has been repaired then it's something to check for.

Door skin definetly original (door panel was never removed) I was thinking that could be the problem. What do you think about applying felt tape between door skin and support?

How bout, bang, thud, squeek or something else?
I noticed a long time ago that the metal parts (inner upper support structure) above the door handle bang together and make god awful banging noises when you close the door.
Also drop a lil drip of motor oil on your hinge pivit points, rollers and your latch inside the door.

FJA I'm assuming everything in and around the door is all lubed up, all door bumpers and weatherstrips are in place and good.
Assuming the skin rattling against the rebar, or just vibrating is the problem. I'm not sure what you mean by felt tape. Years ago I'd recomend butyl tape but heat really melts that stuff sometimes and makes a big mess. I generally use a little panel bond or some good two part seam sealer. If that is your problem then I wonder why it came loose. Paintless dent repair maybe. I've seen those guys cut skins loose before.

I had a similar sound when I closed my doors. It became even louder after I fixed my door hinge pins. Then I happened to notice that the two small bumpers at the end of the door were missing. Replace them and it sounds good closing now. They cost all of $4.

Where are the rubber bumpers located?

On the inside end of the door, about three inches or so above and below the latch. If they are gone, there will be two small holes where they should be. Here's a link to show what they look like:

Also you can pull off the inside door panel and adjust the 2 top window guide
bracket/felts. They are right on top of the door fraME and take a 10 mm
socket.
NO more window rattle..........I did my 84 today when I installed my new
top of door outer window sweep/rubber/felt pieces.
They were a aftermarket brand unknown that came with the car............

Re: Need help with loud hollow sound when closeing door!!
Rubber bumpers are intact...I still believe it's an issue with crash support and door skin. I will have to remove door panel again. It is hard to diagnose noise because you hear it most when closeing from outside. When closeing on inside with door panel off you hear other noises.
Thanks for everyones input so far.

The sticky at the top of the page may be helpful, at least for some common noise issues (though the hollow door syndrome isn't addressed). And if you're removing the door panels anyway....

I already read through that thread and didn't see anything that could be causing that noise.

As I mentioned, the 'hollow door syndrome isn't addressed." There are suggestions, however, that will quiet the doors themselves, and since you''ll be rooting around inside the door anyway, you might consider some of the fixes.
At any rate, since the "hollow door syndrome" is common issue with our cars, please keep us up up-to-date on your progress.

Re: Need help with loud hollow sound when closeing door!!
Just finished putting DynaMax sound proofing in my '84 T/A doors - cleaned the inside of the skin with paint thinner, put a 10" strip full length below the reinforcement bar and a 4" strip above it. Split some foam pipe insulation and cut some 2"x2" pieces to put between the skin and the reinforcement bar and secured them with RTF adhesive. A really nice solid "thunk" when I close them now instead of the hollow oil canning. Really pleased with the results
