Door adjustment

I have read many thread on door adjustments but not getting the answer I’m looking for. I have 89 convertible, the driver door on the corner where it meets the piller and upper part of the fender is pushed in about 1/8 inch , there is no play in the hinge and the gaps are good all around the door, the hinge is welded to the door side and only adjustment I see would be for forward, back, up and down, I need a little out on the upper hinge and only way I can think of is with shims but I have read that shims should not be used and all adjustments can be done with hinge bolts. Any advice? Thanks

Re: Door adjustment

I’ll try and get a picture but the fender and hood line up nice with nice gap, I really have to slam the door for it to close and it seems there is a lot of pressure where the triangle piece on the front of the window meets the weather stripping.

Re: Door adjustment

Is this the original fender? Ever in an accident damaging the driver's side front corner ?. The fender is way out of adjustment. U should have a bodyman diagnose & provide a solution.

Re: Door adjustment

A thought: is the lower fender mount bent? There is a mounting tab behind the front well on the body where the fender bolts too. I that is crushed it would push the fender up and out, causing the bow in the fender not to match the door.

Re: Door adjustment

Verts dont have that flange at the bottom. Its removed by ASC for the rocker reinforcement right behind the gfx, but there is a modified bracket hidden behind the fender just above the gfx. That be worth checking or as mentioned, any accidents/repairs.

You shouldn't shim the doors, they're considered structural pieces. Its why they're so heavy. The bolt holes are sized the same as the bolts so the bolts/hinge fits with zero gap. They're not adjustable. Door adjustments are done on the latch side, but its mostly for that end. Shimming would cause (more) body flex. Since yours is a vert, it already has more flex then non verts.

That said. the top of the fender is adjustable. By loosening the bolts at the top you can push the fender inwards, but considering the hood/fender gap. Id adjust the hood towards the right first. Other concern is the top corner of the fender is pretty close to the A-pillar as is. Hows the hood/fender gap on the pass side?
The triangle seal is adjustable separately.

Re: Door adjustment

Thanks for the replies. I don’t know if it’s ever been accidented. Another thing i noticed is the bottom rear corner of the door is slightly out compared to the quarter panel area. So if the door was adjustable pulling the front top out would also push the bottom rear in making all good but since this is not adjustable on these cars I have to believe something got bent out of whack at some point. I’ve only driving this car about 100kms(60 miles) now that the snow is almost gone , yaaa, and it drives and stops straight so I may just have to live with it for now. Thanks again.

Re: Door adjustment

There might be a way to fix the door from sticking out at the bottom, but it's a bit of a process and I don't want to be responsible if things go wrong.
It basically involves holding the top of the door out a bit with something like a 2x4 (wrapped in a towel). This makes the bottom of the door stuck out more. You then push the bottom corner in. This tweaks the bottom inward till both upper/lower sides are even. You may have to adjust the striker in if the door sticks out afterwards.

This is how some body men fix/adjust hoods/trunks when one side is higher than the other. This may not fix the other issue though. So, no guarantees.
