brake line help....

i have a brake leak on the front passenger side...the rubber hose is sliced open so its an easy fix but in the process of taking it off, i ended up twisting the hard line because the nut was rusted on so much. i know how to fix brake lines but what im stumped about is the slinky looking thing going around the hard line. is it just a casing that pulls off or what is it. i once heard that its hard to get it to uncoil to cut it so that i can flare the end to put on a fitting to fix it. can someone help me out here because i have never dealt with a brake line that had a spiral looking thing around the line. to me it looks like it doesnt come off. so any help would be greatly appreciated, im trying to keep from taking it to the shop because they said it would probably be 100 to 150 to fix. i would rather do the work myself just like i always do. thanks to everyone

It's protection. IIRC, it's called a stone guard. You could purchase new lines for far less than the shop is quoting you.

hey bud. pretty sure that "slinky sleeve" is to keep direct heat off the lines. notice that they are located wherever there is a source of heat. i am doin all brake line on car. saved the right side for last. there is a clip right under the oil pan im havin alot of trouble with.

Re: brake line help....

so what your saying is that i should just replace the whole line from the caliper to brake resevore....sorry cant spell....instead of just stripping that slinky off and flaring it?

I think that JamesC is correct. I have that stuff on my rear lines too.

Re: brake line help....

stone guard...makes sense..thx guys. learn somethin new everyday. check your lines. if they broke removing them, then they may be rotting everywhere. 190 bucks for all s.s lines from inline tube. set of 7

Depends on the year of the car. Early models, 82 to around 84 are SAE. Later cars are metric.

BTW, posting year, make, model, engine, trans, etc. is always helpful.

Re: brake line help....

brake lines are on order and should be shipped out monday....my next question now is what is the easiest way to get the brake line out on the front that goes to the passenger side? just looking at it looks like its going to be a real pain to try to get it out and the new one in place so any help on how to make this job easier would be greatly appreciated

Re: brake line help....

you may have a little fun getting that one off. there are a couple of mounting screws that hold it to the kmember directly below the oil pan. you *might* have to remove the engine mount bolt and jack the engine up a bit to get the clearance you need for your tools to get in there.

Re: brake line help....

my lines are scheduled to arrive thursday. so i will let all of you know how its going. hoping to get it done this weekend since its the only time i have off during the week and am too tired after i get done working 12 hours a day during the week.

also does anyone know if the kit from inlinetube comes with the rubber hoses or just the steel lines?

and also if it comes with new hardware? ex: nuts on the end of the lines, new mounting screws? i dont think i will need either but was just wondering. but i know i do need one new rubber hose if it doesnt come with them

Re: brake line help....

the inline tube stuff is just the metal lines, no hardware or rubber lines
