Front Parking Brake Cable differnces

Hi
so my car, 1992 camaro rear drum, has a broken/frozen front parking brake cable. i see on camaro central they have a 1982-1989.
my question is: What are the differences between the 1982-1989 and 1990-1992 front parking brake cables? I have read here that there is a difference in length, but are all the fittings and end pieces the same? Can the older cables on on the newer car? What changes?
I have been striking out in the junk yard search and i wanted to know how hard a retrofit would be? would i need a new handle as well?
Thanks!

Re: Front Parking Brake Cable differnces

Edit: is there a difference in length between the pressed on fittings? or is there a difference in the distance of the mounting fixtures?
Thanks!

Early cables have a threaded rod on the end that allows you to adjust tension.Later cables do not. They also attach a differently at the e-handle, but I don't remember exactly how. Also the equalizer bracket the attaches front to rear cables is different as well. They do not interchange.

I have the later style on my 84 since the later parking brk cables are slightly more common at the JY & the e-brk handle are a somewhat better design.

Just for general info: 82-89 cars have a tunnel-mounted adjuster above the drive shaft while the 90+ cars self adjust.

I've got a 1988 Camaro, does that mean I can fit the later cable in my car?

Reason I ask is I'm about to replace my Delco disks with rotors and calipers from an LT1 and am trying to figure out the changes required for the handbrake.

I replaced the Delco rear disks on my Camaro with PBR's from an LT1 4th gen.
Here is the thread about it.

Look at post 32 for the part number of the cables I used.
They fit my original '82 front cable and bracket.

More than 10 years later and the cables still work perfectly. I've never had to look at them again since I put them in.

Re: Front Parking Brake Cable differnces

When I "upgraded" to 91 PBR calipers, I kept my original handbrake/cable/equalizer bracket, but switched to the later style some years afterward.Simply because I liked the design better.I think it gives you better leverage & doesn't seem to need cranking it way up (properly adjusted).

The PBR rear cables don't exactly fit the eq bracket like they do the later style, but they did the job.

Re: Front Parking Brake Cable differnces

On my 91 camaro with disc brakes, the hand brake cable snapped on me where the bracket connects to the e-brake cables. I didn't know there was a difference until I got a replacement from the junkyard, and tried to install it with a pre 90 cable.

Question...Would a fourth gen hand brake cable work for the 90-92 cars?

Re: Front Parking Brake Cable differnces

I think early 4th gen, pre 97 might work, but don't quote me on that.
They do look identical.
