Ive got a 5 gig Dell Dj that I hook up to my stereo when I dont feel like bringing my laptop. I keep it on my lap or by the power window buttons, or if I dont have a need of pressing buttons *have a selected playlist that I want to hear for example* I stick it inbetween the console and the emergency brake. Keeping your MP3 player anywhere else, such as a place where you have to look at in order to change songs, is distracting you while driving, bad idea.

How do you like the idea of crashing your lovely car because you didnt want to hear a particular song on your mp3 player and needed to change it?

Im a little biased though, I dont even use my cell phone while driving.

Also, if Ive got my laptop hooked up to my stereo, and I want to change songs all I need to do is press ctr+space, an easy enough shortcut for me to find by hand without having to look at the laptop itself *which sits on the passenger seat*

I personally would not do anything fancy to hold your MP3 player in a visible spot, just something else to distract you.

If I were you, I would figure out a way of mounting it into the console near the window switches. Bevel that area out and make an indentation big enough for your ipod. I cant really think of any other areas to mount it at without making it look like trash. Good luck.

I myself went out and bought the 60G because I have lots of music and I wanted to stop the hastle of bringing cds in my car and then not wanting to listen to the ones I have. Anywho, back to the point. I bought the top of the line alpine a long while ago, when I got it, it said somthing about a ipod interface, once I bought the ipod, I got the interface for 100 bucks. What this does is connect ur ipod to ur headunit to where you control everything throught the headunit. I ran the interface from the headunit thought the middle console into that little compartment, from the interface it hooks into ur ipod, I drilled a hole so i could run the wire into the compartment and i jsut plug in the ipod, shut the lid, and its hidden. Once in there you dont have to touch it until you take it out. I do know they make the interface now for other models. I jsut installed one for a friend and he bought a JVC Head with the interface.

Look into the interface and go from there, it makes things a lot easier. Sorry if it was lenghty.

i always thought it would be coo to cut out the square that says automatic overdrive and put the ipod cable mounted underneath and have it stand up by itself and send the wires underneath and around the shifter.

it would probably be a hell of a lot of work and wouldnt work to well but i think it would be cool

Thats how I did mine. Its a cellphone holder screwed onto a surround sound speaker wall mount. I used the wall mount because it has the ability to change the angle of the ipod so I can get the right angle.

And then I used a Belkin iPod car adapter for power and audio.

Hiding the wire may take some thought but could you mount it in the sun visor? Then whenever you wanted to change songs etc.. You could flip it down. Your eyes would be still be able to see the road through peripheral vision. I have seen monitors mounted there. Hell its where I keep my cell phone. Just a thought.

My Pioneer does the same thing without buying anything and it's a $200+ unit and it has a stealthy front jack for quick connect and disconnect.
Just velcro it to the center console behind the window switches.

Heres what I did with mine. I cut into the amp(like the guy on evil-bay) and spliced a cable with a stereo headphone plug on the end. I can now place the plug wherever I want it. In the dash. In the console. In the glove box. Wherever I decide to drill a hole. That way I can use the shortest cord(1 FT) between the ipod and the plug. No mess of wires. And I can keep my stock UM6 head unit.

It sounds freakin' awsome too! CD quality, no static or hiss.

you have a bunch of options especially with ipods because they make a dock for it enabling you to mount it almost anywhere. You can cut a hole into the the center console and mount it where the power windows switches should be if you dont have them. or you can make a recessed area above the hvac and below the vents them just install the dock in the recess and run your wires. you can install it above the defroster vents with the dock. if you really want to be creative you can make a motorized mount for it and literally put it anywhere in the car. all you would need is a motor that goes in forward and reverse, the switch for it, and a basic sliding mount for it to sit in, and enough wire to run power to it.

Thanks to the abundance of ipod accessories your options are endless.

Does your cd player read the iPod and allow you to search via the head set, or do you use a tape/fm transister? If it's hooked straight up to your cd player I'd say route it underneath your console, even taped atop it because the trans tunnel can get hot, and drill a hole in the bottom of your center console and just keep it in there. But if you need it nearby for a fm transmitter/tape deck I would just simply use some velcro and mount it on the underside of your dash or on the right side of your cig lighter. This way it will be in a convient location to grab but won't be directed to you incase it's light comes on or whatnot. Best thing ever is to spend some extra time and make a couple of playlists, it saves alot of time rather than switching song to song, artist to artist, etc.
