Dash Speakers

When I purchased my 82 Camaro the previous owner replaced the stock 4x6 speakers with 5" rounds, and cut into the dash pad to make them fit. I recently purchased a replacement dash and a new set of 4x6 speakers, however I am having issues mounting the speakers. Is there a piece of hardware that these speakers are supposed to mount into? I can seem to find a place to mount the speakers, and I suspect that he removed this part when he did his hatchet job of installing the 5" rounds. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sell the 4x6 buy a 5 1/4" component set up and mount them in the front kick panel or door. You will be much happier with the sound quality. 4x6 in the dash do not sound good.

You wil find a lot of guys have gone this route for a reason.

Yes my 84 had a metal bracket that the 4x6's mounted too.
You should be able to find one at a junk yard, or even make something yourself out of MDF that you could mount the speaker too.

Thanks for the input, but I'm more interested in the sound of the engine & exhaust, and I'm trying to make my car look nice and clean and get away from the trashy speakers all over the place look.

Thanks...I was thinking about going down to the scrap yard this weekend..last time I was there they had about a dozen old thirdgens. Maybe I'll get lucky and find what I need.

the bracket you are looking for is rectangular 4 by 6 inches and has 4 legs sticking off of it. 2 legs bolt to top of dash fire wall side. other 2 bolt to plastic above your speedo. these brackets weren't painted so are either bare metal or slighty rusted. they also have a rubber seal if stock speakers are still there.
i hope this helps you find what you need at the salvage yard. other wise you could make your own brackets. just get a peice of sheet metal and cut out the hole for the speaker... then run it to the plastic above your speedo then to the firewall... bend this side up so it screws on flat. I hope this all helps. good luck

Ya know I was wonderin about those 4x6 setups.Saw one at the yard recently and was interested.Don't they have a different routing of the defroster setup tubes and heater ducting than the smaller (i think it is)3x4 speakers like in my 90 R/S?Also if they don't sound that good as big as they are with no real enclosure maybe thats why GM went to the smaller setups.Have ya considered lookin into doing a swap to the smaller sets?My 120 watt kenwoods sound pretty good up there. But then again they are on a crossover so they support just the highs my sails handel the mid and the 12 in the back hatch covers all my bass.
But havin the 4x6 setup would give me more space and more options speaker wise.Like 2 sets of those 3inchers they use in my olds.Run 1 set like it is now and the other off the high output from the deck.Hmmmmmmm.Guess it's back ta the yard with a tapemeasure.

Rear speakers in GM vehicles are typically 6x9's. The fronts in the thirdgen F-body are 4x6's. 6x9's would be a major hack job to fit in the dash.

The speaker mounts for the 82 camaros are not the same size for both sides. The right side is different in that it has a offset pad with a hole in it. There is a plastic stud on top of the ECM unit that slides up through the hole. It supports the top of the ECM unit, and most likley keeps it from rattling around. The bottom support for the ECM is two screws that attach to the bottom of the dash.

Let me know if you would like some photos. I have may dash cover removed and the ECM is also out. I can get photo/measurments of right speaker mounting bracket, but not the left bracket. I cannot get teh left bracket out as one of the screws next to the windsheld is stuck in the c clip used as a nut.

Ok I know that the sails are 6x9's and the deck are typicaly 4x6 but the camaro i saw had a set of the 4x9's in it that came stock in my 70/80 olds cutlas.I realy plan ta take pix of that and measure it all out because i thought it looked odd.But i do know that ta put 6x9's in my olds back deck ya HAVE to use adaptors for them ta fit right.
I was wonderin how the 4x9's would fit and sound. If it's transferable then could be modded ta fit the typical 3.5 inchers used in the front deck of my 79/80 olds.
My inital thought train is ta have 1 system low power off the head uint and another high power off the rca jacks thru amps and apropriate crossovers.

Re: Dash Speakers

Ok went back ta the yard yesterday. The 4x9's were in a 86 but what the owner did was remove the 4x6 brackets and just stuck the 4x9's in there. They weren't attached to anything just stuck in the space. My guess is when they tightened the dash pad down that may have held them basically in place but they HAD to sound like crap.Too much viberation from them not being bolted down.
