Double Din radio

Has anyone gotten a double din radio to fit in their camaro? I love the eclipse avn6600 I have in my other car. I don't care for the single din flip out ones. I know the stock one is 1 1/2 din and will require some fabrication. Any pictures? I have a 1990 if there are any differences between years.

This is something I want to do too, I think it might be possible but will take some fabrication to make it look like it's suppose to be there.

It's going to take some cutting of the bezel, and also I think maybe some trimming of the metal bracket that holds the HVAC control in place. Then when it's able to fit, the bezel will need to be fiberglassed or cleaned up somehow to make it all look nice in there.

When I finally get the car drivable again, this is what I'm going to attempt.

Have you done any measuring? It looks like its going to be cutting it close if it will fit in height in the opening.

i really like that eclipse unit also, that's the one with 2 slots right? one for dvds and one for the navigation? I have put alittle bit of thought into it. The way I see it, the metal bracket that holds the heater controls and radio need to be switched around, by running the air down below it would offer more space. then the side of the console and the top plate would need to either be lengthened or all new peices made. I figured I'd get some abs plastic and fab up my own stuff, just havent gotten around to it yet, just like alot of other projects i have worked out in my head.

Yep. I never use the cd/dvd slot because I have the ipod adapter. I don't know how I managed to use cds all those years. Nothing like 3k+ songs at a touch of your finger. I've had this in mind for a while. I love having the big screen but I'm still on the edge if it's worth the trouble. JVC release a really nice single din nav unit. I may just take the easy route and go with it

Re: Double Din radio

Yeah I second the ipod comment. I used to lug around cases of cds, and it was a pain to find whatever you were in the mood to listen to, even worse if you just wanted to hear one song! I would have to come up with clever places to hide my cd cases so that people could ride in my car without sitting ontop of them, or on lookers didn't decide to smash a window to steal my collection. Why don't you use the dvd slot? I would always have something in it even if I don't plan to watch it anytime soon, like maybe family guy series or something along those lines incase if I want to watch something, it isn't as long as a movie that i just watched half of and reached my destination.

How is the interface with the ipod on that? Does it list all the bands or narrow down from categories or what? I will probably get one of those this jan so my project will be underway after that. Does it have enough hook ups for say a ps2 and a reverse camera? I plan to put the camera somewhere near my license plate, not that i need it, but it's nice to have, just like i don't need a ps2 in the car, but time to time you can find the time to play it .

I did some quick measuring of it awhile back, and it will be close.

Width wise, you'll be fine.

For depth, you'll have to take out that bracket for the stock radio. I think doing that will allow the double din to go back as far as it needs too.

The height is going to be the tricky one, I think (for a camaro anyways, not sure about a bird), you'll have to trim the bezel a little on the top and the bottom of the opening to allow it to fit, and I'm not sure, but you may need to trim part of the metal bracket for the HVAC control.

But without having the headunit, that's all I was really able to do with just using the specs from the deck, and measuring the opening.

I do think it can be done and made to look right, it will just take a little work.

Once I have the rest of the car ready, this is a project I'm going to do.

Re: Double Din radio

I had planed on doing this to my ta early this year. The engine took a crap so all the money had to be put into that. BUT my wife is getting a unit for my christmas gift and its going to be so so close. I'm going to take detailed picks of the whole project on my ta and then may do her 92 rs after i find out how involved it is. It seems like there is a little more room to work with in the ta. Stay tuned!

Re: Double Din radio

Ya I want to see one installed too.

I'm hoping once I get the engine swapped out, and the car running again. To start on the audio system.

And a double din nav unit is what I want to install.
