I got a pair of 6-1/2" speakers back there in my '92 Firebird convertible - fit great, sound great with a trunk Kenwood amp. Magnet depth is important.

i mounted a pair of pioneer 6x8's behind the panel a couple of months ago in a 90 vert. it took modification to the body and the speaker. i wanted to keep the stock appearance but the wife likes to listen to music at the appropriate listening level
Mine are mounted behind the panel using the factory/ASC mounts (thin sheets of ABS plastic).
From the outside of the panel they look no different than factory stock.
How is the base on these speakers. I realize it is not like a sub but I used some JBL's that I am not happy with.
Also Do you think there is enough room back there to fab a bracket for component speakers?. Like maybe a 6" round a a small tweeter?
I mounted a pair of boat speakers on mine. They're 6.5, shallow depth so the clear the bracing, but just barely. They rub against the fabric thats on the brace itself, but i a wanted a flush look on the interior side.Sound is pretty good, no bass, but i have my 6x9s mounted in the void between the tonneau hinges.

Do you have a pic of the 6x9's installed?
I want to retain my original look also.

Sound is very subjective - to me the bass from the 6.5" JBL's is good to very good w/ a Kenwood 80W RMS amplifier mounted in the trunk. I listen to old school 60's, 70's, & 80's Rock n' Roll music cranked moderately loud (max is halfway on the dial) and for that they're great. For newer music w/ that weird low frequency bass thump (not sure what actual musical instrument produces that sound or if it's fully synthesized) they will be inadequate, so you'll need an amplified sub woofer in addition.
i did not measure the volume of the cavitities when I had the panels off, but the JBL 6.5's pretty much filled them up - if you're going component, I'd recommend either some very small components or going to the kick panels/doors instead.
If if you want the 'stock' look, anything will be a compromise between looks and sound - if you want the absolute best killer sound, you'll have to use all modern components and start cutting things up and it certainly won't look stock, although there are ways to make it look clean & much less obvious.

I get pretty good bass from my 6x9s (trunk acts like a box), i contemplated not getting a sub woofer.Still undecided if ill keep the sub though.
That's all I am looking for ...pretty good will do. Right now I got nothing I think I am going to start with a new head unit. I think part of my problem is I have a low power unit. It is an older pioneer with some Mintrax thing that distorts the song if you hit the button. I am looking at a 80w x 4 Sony with 50w rms. Maybe a little more power will help the JBL's I have now.
I take it you had some issues with these? I have never had a Sony product and have heard good things about their head units. I am by no means married to a Sony, I just found a good deal on this unit as it is a discontinued by Sony. It is a high power marine unit with all the new tech features.
Since I have not purchased anything yet what do you recommend Blacksunshine? I don't want to go external amp so I am looking for a unit with at least 50 RMS x4.

I apologize for not replying. I missed seeing your question. I assume you've probably moved on, but I'll answer anyway. I, personally, am partial to Kenwood. Not their low-end crap you buy at some retailers. Their more expensive models are actually a pretty good bang for the buck. I have a KIV-901 (or something like that) in both of my cars. It's rated at 50w X 4, but I don't use the internal amp at all. I actually have it shut off. I have two external amps in each car as well. The head unit also can connect to my phone via Bluetooth, is satelite radio compatible, and has a backup camera among its features. I'm pretty happy with it. I paid around $350 or something years ago when it was new. Not sure how much the current models go for, but I'm very happy with it.
