'84 Camaro - Looking for good fit radio w/CD player
'84 Camaro - Looking for good fit radio w/CD player
What the title says. I'm currently in the middle of sorting out the radio wiring in my camaro. PO replaced the factory unit with a crappy chinesium aftermarket radio, which constantly blew the fuse for the electronic locks(?). Was wondering if that circuit is the correct one for the ignition 12v wire to run to (I'm guessing it isn't) and what would be a good radio to replace it with. As far as I know, only one of the speakers works, but I'm going to replace the obvious fire hazard before I get into those.

ANY 88-94 GM Cd Player is gonna' be a 'big' expense.......... There were tons of 95+ CD players that will fit and they ( Chevy ) all look almost exactly alike.
The 88-92 (or so) had problematic CD players, but they can still be found used and working from time to time. The 92-94(ish) style were more reliable and are also very desirable. The 95-02 style were real reliable CD players, and because there were so many installed in just about every car and truck of that era; they can be found pretty cheap and easy.
Then there's always aftermarket head-units if that's your thing.

That's what I meant - was looking for aftermarket stuff, hopefully there are some quality options available but I have no idea what I'm doing. More of an idea than the last guy though.

I guess the best place to start is to shop around for head units that will fit in the factory radio 'hole' then pick the head unit from the 'they fit' list based on how you want the Speakers to be set-up in the car. Follow the head units instruction as far as speaker OHMs and any other specific requirements. Most will have the same set of features & you're the only one that's gonna' know what kind of radio is appealing to you - so start shopping !

Radios kinda' old now, I've got this,....... You would need a installation kit. Probably an 08 or so model. ( can check, or search online )

Anyone know where to get a wiring diagram that includes the radio? Haven't been able to find one yet and it's fairly important as the constant 12v power supply is currently run through the CTSY 20a circuit (the one that runs the door locks and trunk solenoid).

Here Ya' Go !

Some early cars used a "hot" wire as shown in the pic...... it was plugged into one of the BAT ports on the face of the fuse-box. Pretty sure the 84 was wired that way.

No Problem !
ORANGE is basically for the clock and station memory,... the YELLOW is what sends power from the fuse-box "Radio" fuse to turn the radio on.

John - can you share what manual you have pictured? I have a similar one for my 78 Vette and love it for its clarity. My 85 FSM has the electrical section but it is all in black and white.

I don't know why it says 25AMP on the radio schematic,....... The Fusebox schematic from teh same shop manual shows a 20AMP too !

thainglo: These schematics were both pulled from the 1984 Camaro "HELM" ship manual.

One last question - did the 1984 have door speakers? Can't seem to find a definitive answer. I got the new head unit installed and working (it's amazing how few fuses you blow when the battery ground isn't soldered to the 12v ignition wire) but the speakers are totally shot. I've got new ones for the dash and rear seat panels, but crutchfield recommended speakers for the doors as well. Didn't order them at the time because I didn't think the car had any but now I'm not so sure.

Nope; Thirdgens never got door speakers from the factory. 2 4x6 fronts in the dash blasting "highs' at you off the windshield and 6x9 Woofers in the back sail panels hitting the back of your head with "lows".
