Radio rebuild

Pulled the UX1 head unit out today and packed it up for shipping to M&R Electronics in Saginaw. Spoke with Scott there last week and felt very comfortable after talking to him that he knows what he is doing and I'll get my HU back as good as new (almost). I will report back and let everyone know.

Since the HU was so messed up when I bought it, there was no way for me to evaluate the speakers, which I believe are the stock "extended range" speakers. So, not sure how they sound, but will know once I get the HU back. If I am not happy with them, I may replace them.

If I do replace them, does anyone have a recommendation for what to use (brand and model)? Just looking for direct replacements - not looking to build out a killer stereo system. I assume there are four speakers? What size are they?

Appreciate any input...

Re: Radio rebuild

I also have an 88 Iroc w/working UX1 head unit. I want to replace my speakers, but the issue is they need to be 10 ohm. I'm going to look into a line level converter and a small amp so I can run any ol' speaker and not burn up this head unit. Like you, I want to keep it simple, but if I'm going through the trouble of adding those components I'm looking into adding an under-seat sub and kick panel speakers. Good luck in your hunt. I plan to post what I go with here.

Re: Radio rebuild

U can swap 8 ohm speakers for the 10 ohm speakers. been there & done that on a 1972 Buick GS, many years ago.

Re: Radio rebuild

Look forward to hearing how the head unit turns out as well as what speakers you go with. I just pulled my UX1 head unit on my '88 TA for a double-din Kenwood. Even with the existing speakers, the sound is significantly improved. Now I think I will put in some new speakers, but also not trying to break glass with them.

Re: Radio rebuild

Got my HU back - shipped it out Monday morning and got it back Thursday evening! Great service! My LR speaker is blown, so I will be replacing the rear speakers...then I will be able to better review its performance. For now, I will leave the factory front speakers as I don't really want to pull the dash if I don't have to. Maybe one day down the line...

Anyway, looking for recommendations on best rear speakers to get that are simple replacements for the factory speakers. Not looking for the most expensive...just something that will give good performance at a reasonable price. What ohms should I be getting?

TIA for any suggestions.

Re: Radio rebuild

:RARIROC" As I recall, over a year ago I removed the dash PAD from my '89 IROC Z Vert . It's just a few Phillips screws, going straight up into the pad. This gave me access to the NOT OE dash speakers.

I too have a good used OE AM/FM/CASSETTE HEAD UNIT, I will install. Along w/ new speakers.

I have read several threads on OE speaker OHM values, with NO agreement on what was OE.

WHAT was the actual OE Ohm ratings? Please lets NOT divert to a discussion alternate replacements, just OE Ohm ratings.

Thank you, mikeceli

Re: Radio rebuild

My OEM rear speakers were 10 ohms (see pic). I assume the front speakers are 10 ohms too, but I don't know that for sure.

I am replacing the rear speakers with Sony XS-690GS 6x9 speakers that are rated at 4 ohms.

My understanding is that the OEM HU has an amp for the left channel and a second amp for the right channel. So, if my front speakers are 10 ohms, I will have a 10 and a 4 ohm speaker on each channel, which should be fine...from everything i have read. If my front speakers have been replaced (which I doubt) with aftermarket 4 ohm speakers, I may have issues...or may not, depending on who you believe. YMMV.

Re: Radio rebuild

Rear speakers have been replaced with the Sony speakers noted above and the factory HU performs perfectly now, just as it should. Not going to win any audiophile contests, but I am happy with the results.
