amp cuts out after 2 mins
ok i dont have anything special, just a 250w Sony amp hooked up to 1 sub, well i got the amp from my sisters old car, its all installed, sometimes it works for long long times, but then sometimes it will run for like 2 mins or less and cut off...
what could the cause be?

Could be a few things. Your alternator is shot and your battery doesn't want to run it so it will shut off. The wires you aree getting your power from could be loose somewhere and could cause it to turn off if you hit something. A rodent could have chewed onit..that happend to mine. It could also overheat if you put it in the wrong place. Simple solutions lets hope it is one of these...otherwise your sisters amp could be **** and used up.

My guess is that it's going into thermal protection mode. What impedance is the sub? Is this amp capable of being bridged?

I'm not sure what could be your problem, but let me tell you what hapend in my car. I installed an amp with a pair of 12, and the amp was sutting off when I was at a stop light or when I pressed the brake. The amp has good gauge battery and ground cables.
The lights used to dim when I played loud bass, I went to an audio shop and they told me that I needed a biger battery or alternator, but I did not sound right to me.
The thing that I was missing was a good ground path, but not from the amp to the body, but from the battery to the body. I went to pep boys and for less than five bucs I bougth a cable, installed it, and solve that problem. Hope this helps, good luck.

Same thing happened to me. My amps would keep cutting off and on. I tried everything and traced it to the ground. Make sure you have a good ground if not it will shut off like that. One of my grounds were lose thus shutting it down at times. My car would run fine and the battery was fine. I wouldn't go as far as saying it's your alternator. what are your amp specs??? and are you powering more than one amp???

Is the amp getting hot? If it is, then your problem is the ohms is too low with your setup.
You didn't mention what kind of sub you have.

its a single sony 250watt amp, model : (BRB i am getting the name down)
sadly it wont stay on long enough to get hot... its powering a small single 10 inch jbl sub... the sub sits in the botom of the trunk well. the amp is inside the spare tire well.(it dosent get hot/warm) the amp is screwed onto a piece of speckle wood, that is cut to fit onto the spare tire screw piece. only ground the amp gets is from the (-) ground wire.
my ground wire isnt on good. i think thats the problem.
where is a good place/way to attatch the ground wire to? its gheto riged by (striped wire) being twisted on a sanded metal hangar. kinda loose.
lol i just put it in for a little bass sound to my stereo...
would it be a good idea to run a

if you take off your spae tire panel and look inside toward the front there is this metel braket (i bealive for the seat belt) but it already has a hole in the side. thats were i put my ground and its fine. good luck
make sure your remote lead is good, i had a loose wire when i had my truck and it kept cutting my amps out. I had to power off and power back up for them to work again till i hit the next bump.
