As far as i know, Koss = cheap junk, unconditionally. I could be wrong but all their stuff looks cheap and is marketed next to other stuff that is.

I would agree that KOSS is probably junk. For the price you mentioned I'm sure you could find better. I saw a Alpine 7871 on a website for around 225 that is more deck than the KOSS could probably dream of being. Put a few more pennies in the bank and keep shopping. You can get better for that price.

Pioneer, Clarion, Alpine, Kenwood, to a lesser extent Sony...you can find a decent head unit of this make for your price range anywhere, a good place to look being Ebay...Do NOT buy Koss....that's like buying a Sorny or a Panaphonic...

stay away from brands that you never heard reviews about or look chunky. jensen, koss, pretige, pep-boy, wallmart, k-mark brand radios. I find it hilarious when i walk by a endcap with headunits wrapped in blister packs.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong ...

Koss is an audio company started by Henry Koss who was very well respected for his audio designs. Koss used to be known for some nice home audio headphones. I believe he also got into designing audio processors and speakers as well as other kinds of stuff. There products used to be good quality.

HOWEVER, I believe Henry Koss is no longer working for the company called Koss. I believe their design efforts were turned over to a bunch of marketers and is not longer controlled by somebody who actually knows what they are doing. Car audio is a relatively new venture for Koss.

I would avoid Koss car audio products. They aren't proven products and respected in car audio circles. If, however, you wanted to buy a new set of headphones for your Walkman then I'd say Koss is a responable choice.

Sounds about right. Regardless, any company who's car cd product proclaims "High-tech digital audio processor!" on the box should be avoided...

Koss is Krap.

Henry Kloss started his career at Acoustic Research, moved on to KLH, Advent, and went on to start Cambridge Soundworks. Lots of high quality HOME audio equipment, but no car. Koss has nothing whatsoever to do with Henry Kloss.

Like Jim said, that was Henry Kloss you're thinking of. Incidentally, all of those once-great company names have now fallen into the junkpile. Advent, and recently, Acoustic Resarch, were bought up by Recoton, who also owns the once-great Jensen name.

Don't get me wrong; I don't think the Jensen stuff is anywhere near as bad as people make it out to be... but it is NOT, by any means, a high-fidelity product engineered by the original Peter Jensen.

I'm not too sure of the history of Koss, but I understand it used to be a real company at one point, making real stuff, especially high-quality headphones.

At any rate, virtually anything with the Koss name on it is now junk. Most likely, the CD will get stuck inside after a couple months; that was my experience as an installer. Furthermore, Koss head units typically retail in the $69-99 range, depending on what features you get, so that $225 unit is probably way overprice anyway.

For $225, you can move pretty far up the model lineup of any manufacturer; you'll get a radio with multipe pre-outs, CD changer controls, and a remote. Or you could go on eBay, buy a nice factory Delco unit for $125-150, and use the leftover money to add a nice four-channel amp to it.

my friend had a koss in his corolla now that i think about. One day, his battery died .. and then after power was restored, it never played cds ever again. I don't understand it, or may be just pretty coincidental.

deadtrend, tell your friend to press the Reset button behind the faceplate, with the tip of a ball-point pen. It might get the CD player going again.
