Firebird Hood Scoop
Firebird Hood Scoop
I have a 1987 Firebird Formula with the factory hood (and scoop with the opening facing the driver). If I were to remove the plug, what modifications would I need to do to the carb?
Nothing. You can get a lid for a 1982-1984 Firebird that had the functional ram air at the dealer, this has a hole in the lid with a gasket around it. Then you can run a hose to the hole.

If I opened up the plug, would it hurt anything? I would allow more air to go into the carb right? Also, would an airfilter without the pan work, the one that bolts on the carb?

If you open up the scoop, then it might help in cooling the engine bay down a bit. However, you should probably find some way to close it when it rains. (I use packaging tape, who cares what it looks like if it works, right?)
Just buying an open element is probably the best airflow solution you can do. Summit sells a chrome 14"X3" drop base cleaner w/ filter for $20. That would be a cheap way to go.

I have the functional hood scoop on my '83 TA. It has the hole that fits around my carborator, and wires connected to it. I think it reacts to when I press the gas pedal. Well, any ways, look on ebay. I saw somebody selling this piece for $9.99. They said it would fit the '82-'84 powerbulge hoods as well as the ones on the 87 and up formulas.
Jim's right. The factory piece opens up the passage from the scoop to the air cleaner assy. when you go to WOT. It's actually a little electrical servo that opens the flap. The majority of the "guts" are part of the special Firebird air cleaner assy. but there's also a molded air passage that connects between the scoop opening and the top of the air cleaner. The air passage is bolted to the hood and mates with the air cleaner via a rubber gasket as you close the hood.

Axle/Gears: ones that turn.
For another way to make the bulge functional, check out the 'tech' link in my sig for an article I copied from PHR several years ago. They ultimately gained 18 hp at the rear wheels using it.
