If the motor still runs after turning in all the idle screws all the way, the motor is getting fuel from somewhere other than the idle discharge ports/ idle circuit.

Bown/ leaking power valve diapharam, dirt stopping the power valve from seating at idle, {get a fuel filter) bad metering block gasket. ( loose fuel bowl screws)
are the usually suspects.
Other causes are flooding (fuel dribbling from the main
venturis at idle) (dirt in fuel inlet needle and seat,{get a fuel filter}
bad float, high float level)

Did the engine backfire or spit back throu the carb recently?

Daz, you seem to have a lot of trouble with that carb.

do you have the throttle stop screw so far in that perhaps its off the idle circuit?

No the throttle stop is not all the way in..In fact its only less than a quarter in(or less)..It also could be related to this

what is the ignition timing at idle while in neutral an while in gear. What happens when you unplug the vacuum advance? On what vacuum port is the vacuum advance plugged into?

If its plugged into full manifold vacuum it will idle high in neutral.
