Best carb in my case??
allright i have a 1983 305, i picked up a 'performance' 350 sbc, its rated with the quadrajet carb and cast iron intake manifold to be 275hp, now i decided to go with the edelbrock 2101 performer intake manifold on the recommendation of the guy who sold me the block, however he refuses to "divulge" what carb would suit it best, so my question if based on usage with the 2101 what carb do you guys recommend to get??

Re: Best carb in my case??
Edelbrock 600 or 650 tops. For what your looking to do its the most efficient and reliable street carb for a standard 350 sbc. If you were building a mild to wild 350 I would say lean towards the 650 or step to a nice holley.
I had a e/b 600cfm on a 355 with rpm cam, rpm intake and Vortec heads and ran low 13's with it.

Or, if you can find one, a 69-70 Q-Jet from a 350; carb # 7089202

I think you'll find, that Holley is AHELLUVALOT better carb than the Carter.... better linkage, better fuel line arrangement, better air cleaner fit, runs better, gets better gas mileage, just better period. Well worth the extra couple of bucks, you'll make it back in a few weeks of gas.

I agree with 57, the quadrajet is the best choice, though this is the only carb setup I've ever worked on, it runs great on the street.

Re: Best carb in my case??
If you still have your stock carb, rebuild it. That will also require your stock distributor and ECM, along with thesensors and wiring that your car came with.
The carb isn't anywhere near being a limit to the performance of the motor you describe.
My suggestion was based on the (perhaps flawed?) assumption that you didn't have that any more.
That'd be the first and best choice. If you HAVE TO replace it, like if you don't have it any more or the rest of the system is so hacked up or missing that it can't be restored, then the other would be the way to go.

Re: Best carb in my case??
thanks a lot for the input .... saves me some $$$'s there....i just ran out and checked....the carb is new (or newly rebuilt) its stilll un-dirty and new....so ill have it looked at but will prolly run the existing one...and plus if it craps out...its right on top..so easier to replace....i was actually considering changing the distributer to a brand new one.....but im thinking that you guys are thinking to stay with the stock distributer??

Any chance of posting pictures of the carb and distributor?
Stock HEI's often die above 4500 RPMs. The "fix" is an aftermarket module and coil.
If you get another distributor, a good one will run you a couple hundred. I picked up an Accel HEI with Supercoil last September when my 2nd ignition system failed at the track (first failure was caused by getting the MSD wet in the car wash
- never figured out what happened to the 2nd one). Oh, the 2nd system was a factory HEI distributor, Crane HI-6 box, and an MSD in-cap coil. The engine pulled to 6200 RPMs with the factory distributor and Accel set-up, just like it did with the full MSD system.

Re: Best carb in my case??
Also you can modify the stock carb to better handle the bigger engine. There is a sticky at the top of this forum. When I eventually get m 350 swap I plan on sticking with the stock setup myself.
