carb rebuild?

Hi fellow carb problem people.
I recently bought an 84 trans am.
Allegedly the carb had been rebuilt though there was a kit box in the back seat. Also there's a tranny filter replacement kit.
I have posted the remaining contents of the box in an attachment.
If anyone could look at this and tell me if these parts SHOULD have been used in the rebuild I'd be appreciative.
Also if they should have gone in...should I take it apart again and rebuild?
Or should I wait and get the rest of my issues fixed before going to the trouble coz maybe it is all set up correctly and shouldn't be messed with.
Being as it was a home job I'm guessing...I am suspicious of these remaining parts.
All input welcome and appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: carb rebuild?

What kind of problems are you having? Depending on the kit manufacturer there might be extra parts included to make the kit alittle more flexible on the application. THAT many extra parts, I have no idea.

Re: carb rebuild?

I'm not sure about all the rest, but the 3 little machine screws and metal tabs are for the choke t-stat, the old ones could have been re-used to mount it back to the choke housing... that's all I know...lol

But if there are that many "new" parts left in the box, makes me wonder why they weren't replace at the time of rebuild...gotta wonder if they used the old parts because they deemed them worthy...but I know if I had new parts already, I'd use them regardless. The more I think about it, the more I'd advise you to get the numbers off the side of the carb and go buy a 20 dollar kit at the parts store and re-do it yourself, just for the peace of mind...quadrajets aren't that difficult to rebuild.

Re: carb rebuild?

Yeah, there's a few parts left they should have installed, but if it runs fine you may be alright. A carb rebuild is really only a good, thorough cleaning with new gaskets and rubber parts. Some of those gaskets are extras that come with every kit-make it fit more carb models.

Got any specific questions, just ask.

Re: carb rebuild?

If I had to guess, I'd say about the only thing they did was replace the airhorn gasket (to stop a typical leak point in old QJets). Quite a few things there should have been used in a full rebuild.

Re: carb rebuild?

thanks for the quick responses guys.
I'm not actually having any problems yet until I can get the car running with oil flow and coolant flow as per my post in general engine tech. Having issues in that dept, so until then I guess I'll chew over the idea of a personal rebuild.
It just looks very daunting as I've never done it before. I also do not have any of the feeler gauges and stuff that's mentioned in the rebuild and adjustment details manual. How do you guys do this?
So many parts to it I'd be afraid to deem it FUBAR and need to spend more than required. However I am a dab hand at mechanics. Still learning about my car.
If I do actually have more specific Q's I'll be sure to hit you guys up for sure.

Thanks again.

Re: carb rebuild?

I've been having carb problems myself and I too was kind of hesitant to pop the carb open myself. I just did it today though because I'm desperate to get my car running again and it actually isn't nearly as bad as you would think. The exploded parts diagrams make it look really chaotic on the inside but it's fairly straightforward. I have very limited knowlege of cars so I didn't want to do it myself but I figured, since it wasn't working right anyway, I might as well take a shot at it. I'll find out tomorrow if I screwed anything up but I doubt I did. My carb is a Holley 4160 but I'd imagine the quadrajet isn't terribly different.
