have an issue

i went to install an electric choke kit on my holley 3310-3 ( 750 vac secondaries ) and i hooked it up correctly ( at least i think i did ) and it was ideling at 4k rpms!!!. i tried to adjust the choke thermostat but to no avail it no matter which way i turned it it was still at 4k. so i shut off the car and adjusted the idel screw on the driver side and turned it way down. still nothing changed still idel at 4k. then i tried to adjust the timing and that seemed to work but as soon as i hit the gas it died out. so then i turned it back to where it was before and tried to start it up and i got nothing at all just cranking and alot of it. after about 30 mins of triying ( stoping in between so it wouldnt be flooded ) i decided to take off the electric choke and put it back to how it was with no choke at all. now i still cant get it to start and all it does is backfire terriably out of the carb. i mean im getting flames that i gotta blow out. any ideas anyone my car is now stuck on the side of my house and i need to be able to drive it. please some one help me out

Don't know how you did it fiddling with the choke, but sure sounds like your timing is all messed up.

Hard to say what when wrong with your install, but I assume you got some linkage on improperly that was holding the throttle open.

I'm not seeing any reference to a white tab. Do you have a pic of it?

Re: have an issue

i found where it goes. im an idiot its the piece that goes on the rod below the hole that the rod goes into on the carb body. i guess its there to hold the rod more in place then to let it just go all over. i went out today and found another carb on craigslist in my area for 35 bucks. its the same carb but only 1 number is different. the carb i have is a 3310-3 and this one i just got is a 3310-2. reasons i got it was 1 it was only 35 bucks and 2 its so i can have a reference point granted this one looks by far alot cleaner then the one i have installed now. this one has a mechanical choke on it, and i asked the guy about the issue i have in the morning with it starting up then dieing out as soon as i let go of the gas. he said it shouldnt have anything to do with the choke parts, but he also wasnt sure what was up with it. i have advanced the idel on my car pretty far, its at about 14 degree's and it idles higher like around 1000-1200, but as soon as i put it in drive it drops to like 800 and basically shuts off, i really cant drive it like this unless the engine warms up a little. i live in florida and cold really isnt an issue. is there anything else i can do to remedy this start then shut off thing?

Actually that white piece (and I was wondering if that's what you were referring to, but you said it was part of the kit) is there to seal the rod, keeps unfiltered air from getting into to the carb (sort of).

Are you running vacuum advance? If so, which port do you have it connected to?

Re: have an issue

yes im running vac advance its on the port on the metering block of the carb. is this not a great place to put it? also i noticed tonight when i had to move my car, that i let it warm up a bit and when i put it into drive it moved but like 2 feet back it died. it starts right back up but i want it to be more reliable. not sure if its a tuning issue im having but i would like an idea of what to do. also i wanna thank you for the help i really apperciate it!!

Turn up the choke idle a little. Sounds like it's dropping too low when the vacuum opens the choke up after starting. May also need to adjust the vacuum opening, and I'd have to bone up how to do that (haven't had a Holley with an electric choke for 6 years, and it didn't act that way for me).

Re: have an issue

is it possible that the carb is having some issues it self? cause when i explained it to the other guy he was puzzled as well. the other carb i have has a manual choke, would it be smart to install that one and set it up?
