Edelbrock 1405 install problem
I bought a Edelbrock 1405 today to replace my older 1406. I am using a Edelbrock Performer RPM intake. I called Edelbrock yesterday and they told me the 1406 wasnt the right carb for that manifold. The new 1405 idles way worse then the 1406, in fact I had to advance the timing almost 10 degrees to get it to idle decent. This is a Chevy 355, brand new everything< I went thru all the supplied manuals and watched the videos. I have no vacuum leaks. Everything is hooked up right. When I put the 700r4 trans in gear, it feels like its gonna stall out, idle is set at 900 rpm's, drops to 500 in gear. I adjusted the air mixture screws to the best idle and best vacuum. I do think its running rich, can smell it somewhat. The cam is a .447 lift..................Anyone with suggestions?
thanks !

Is it a new carb? I've got a 1409 which is jetted almost like the 1405 and it runs excellent on every vehicle I put it on. I wasn't really a fan of these carbs until I stumbled upon a good one. If it's new then I'm surprised it isn't working much better for you.

yes it is brand new.................I had left everything the same from the previous carb, just swapped it out. I will try more timing and idle speed adjustments today.................From what their ads say, just bolt them on and go, yeah right.........

Re: Edelbrock 1405 install problem
I worked on a 72 L48 Chevelle last year. It had a 1406 Eddie on it. The thing had a BAD vacuum leak on the base plate. Ended up being warped. I rebuilt the factory Rochester and this car ran like a raped ape.
I'm not a fan of Eddie carbs. I would rather have a Holley or Rochester. Try here......

Re: Edelbrock 1405 install problem
the 1405 and 1406 are the same carb with some minor differences to the choke and jetting.
The 1406 was electric choke and 1405 is manual choke. Did you remove or set up the choke correctly? The 1405 should run your engine fine otherwise.

You mentioned the cam lift, how about the duration specs? Lift is pretty much useless information to describe the idle characteristics of a cam. Advertised duration, duration at .050" lift, and LSA would be helpful.
I would guess that you don't really need the Performer RPM, but it probably isn't hurting you. For Edelbrock to tell you the 1406 is the wrong carb for that intake, without knowing the cam specs (did you give them the cam specs?), is very poor technical advice.
Re: Edelbrock 1405 install problem
As far as the op, I am confused. Your saying that edelbrock had you replace your 600 cfm electric choke carb with the same 600 cfm carb with a manual choke? Did they not like you car warming itself up?

The 1405 is "calibrated for performance", and " Match with a variety of manifolds that include Edelbrock Performer, Performer EPS, Performer RPM, RPM Air-Gap, Torker II and other brands of similar design."
The 1406 is "calibrated for fuel economy", and "not recommended for use on RPM or Torker II intake manifolds".
Hence the recommendation to the OP.

Re: Edelbrock 1405 install problem
How long has it been since you did the intake? I just worked on a 350 that was sucking air from the crankcase because of a slipped intake gasket. I found it by placing my hands over the breathers at the same time. I had to compensate idle for the vacuum leak because the customer didn't have the money to pay for me to pull the top end.
Just for the hell of it, I'd spray carb cleaner everywhere. It's possible you deceloped a leak after swapping carbs. Just cover your bases, just in case.
