No 1st gear power?
No 1st gear power?
I have a 89 Iroc with a 327 in it, .488 .488 cam, edelbrock performer intake, 305 heads milled .030, 3:73 gears, Built 700r4. I think that the problem is in the carb, which is a 600 edelbrock with electric choke. The car just doesnt pull hard in 1st gear but it does rev up really quick, then when i hit 2nd gear the car just explodes(gettting sideways) and takes off. I already know that this carb is way out of whack, because it was my friends carb (who never ran an air filter on it for about a year) and i have no idea how to adjust this carb. My friend had this carb on his 355(83 Z) and had similar problems so thats what makes me think that the carb is the problem. Im gettin 6psi of fuel pressure, and the car runs excellent. Thanks for any help.
what size of converter is in that tranny?
also whats the duration on the cam?
Ive got a 350 with a .480 I/E lift and 235 duration and with a stock converter its a dog. Gave it a little looser converter and she woke right up.

The cam duration is 234/234 and I do have a stock converter. I do plan on getting a stall converter this summer. I haven't heard too many good things about B&M's. What would be my best bet?
i've heard that TCI makes a good one.
Just do a search and you'll quickly discover what everyone likes.
Like you said though, stay away from the B&M, I havent heard much good about it.
I just have a locally built one, so i have no idea which name brand is best
good luck, im sure you'll be VERY happy with a good converter with that cam.

What you're describing is loss of low end torque or low end driveability. That is something I would blame on the cam or intake manifold. I would say look there first.
As for the Edelbrock, it is pretty easy to tune. I suggest you go to their website to get the tuning instructions and come back with questions about that. A badly adjusted carb will only suck a little power and driveability out of the engine... if the engine runs.

I figured out the problem guys. The stupid ****ing choke was sticking under acceleration(the secondaries weren't opening!) I knew that there was something wrong with that carb because the idle would always go back up after hitting the gas. After I rigged the choke up so it would never come on, it fixed the problem and it was like driving a new car. Now I have tons of power whenever I want it!!
