freakin q-jet problems driving me crazy.!!!!!!!

my damn q-jet is about to make me slash my wrists. and im sick of screwing with it. So i guess im going against all my principls and im gonna take it to the shop to get the damn thing fixed. But where is the best place to get it fixed and tuned to the car? Most of my problems come from the electrical calibrations from the computer. would it be best to take it to a auto electrical place or my regular mechanic or a carb shop?
thanx for the help.

Spitefire, I just Swapped out the Comp Qjet when it went south, and Put in a Mech One I had laying around, the Car Ran great Untill I screwed up the carb, Just 30 minutes ago I swapped in yet another Mech Qjet and its running great once again. The only side effect : Check Engine light

Of course, this wont pass smog, but thats not For Two years...

After 200,000 miles I was feeling like you. I purchased the Haynes Rochester manual and $30 worth of stuff from Thexton. Runs great now. If you want to try it read a manul about four times before you touch the thing.

What I did was Simply Unbolt the Old one, and Put on the Mech, The Tps and MC wires Just Dangle, I taped them into the Other Corrugated Tubing there. You get Codes ( Bad TPS, bad MC solenoid ) But the Car Runs fine, I didnt Experiance any loss Of Gas Milage, and actually Picked up some throttle response, altho I attribute that to the old carb having 147k On it

I would imagine a edlebrock Qjet would work just fine, Even Better than The One Im running, im sure

I hope you also put on a distributor with mechanical/vacuum advance. If not, you're still not getting the throttle response, power, or mileage you could.

In the magazine articles on this board, two of the new ones are Hot Rod articles by Steve Green, who resurrected a '83 Trans Am. He sent his computer controlled carb and ECM to Jet Performance Products, and was completely pleased with the results. I'd suggest you read those two articles.

I'm curious if you guys who have removed the computer controlled carb and distributor still have functioning torque convertor lockup and cruise control.

Oh, yeah, your other question. If you go to a mechanical carb, you can use an Edelbrock Q-jet. I have a 1903 on my '84 van with 350 and TH700R4, it works great. I converted the 1903 over to electric choke (it was a going out of business sale, and they didn't have any electric choke models left). I'd suggest getting the 1904, which has the electric choke.

I've noticed Q-Jets can only stand two rebuilds before getting AFU and then it just never is the same. Of course, overtorquing the screws doesn't help either! Once the airhorn or body gets warped, there's no hope.

I finally just caved in and bought another remanufactured ECM Q-Jet. Car runs like brand new now. Should've done that a long time ago.

Definitely, be sure to get an older, non-ECM HEI distributor with that mech Q-Jet!!

Hey, send your carb to The Carburetor Shop in California. They built mine to match my engine upgrades and it worked out great.

Fivekid, Yeah Im putting the Vaccum Dist In Tomarrow, As for TCC lockup and Cruise control, they Both Work Fine.

The cruise control is Vaccum Activated, And the Carb I used Had the Mounting Bracket For it.

For TCC, it locks up in OD just fine, I instaleld a manaul switch to Lock It Other times and have had No Problems.

Is your cruise control run off of the speedometer cable? In other words, does the speedo cable go to the cruise control govenor and then to the speedometer, or does it go directly to the speedometer? Both use a vacuum servo to pull on the throttle, by the way.

The original system on my '82 was the former, the '86 is the latter. If yours is the older govenor type, I can understand that the cruise still works because it is a stand-alone system. The latter type uses the VSS and ECM to run the cruise (as does my '84 van, for that matter). That's why I ask the question.

Sounds like the TCC continues to function, so perhaps these two systems don't depend upon signals from the carb & dist to function.

No, the CC is stand alone, the Speedo cable Does not Run Through it.

I put the Vaccum Dist In Today, And the Car is Runnig really Well, I re Timed it to 8* BTDC and picked up quite a bit of response. Waiting On My Crane Dist Recurve kit to See about Throwing in the Advance a little sooner.
