Electric Water Pumps, Anyone using one? streetable?

I am considering an electric water pump for the 87 T/A. Do any of you have one installed and using it daily? If not what have you heard. I read the meziere advertisement said 2500hr life. That computes to 105 days straight driving or approx 100,000-150,000 miles. I am just looking for suggestions and your experiences, thanks

PS Also was it hard to install? Any notice in cooling and performance, I know it won't be much......

I almost got an electric water pump until i found out the life span for them. around 50 hours, good for a strictly track car but not for a street car. If you find anything else about them let me know b/c i could be wrong

The thing about electric pumps is they are still no match for a high performance machanical pump even with todays technology.

The best electric water pump will be about the same as a good quility mech pump in terms of flow at idle only. After that the mechanical pump leaves the electric pump in it DUST.

I highly recommend Stewart water pumps. They are the best out there, period.

I didn't know of such a performance gap between electric and mechanical! WOW! Maybe I will stick with a better than standard mechanical. I was mainly trying to get rid of underhood accesory (SP?) noise and free up a couple horses. Thanks

I'd just leave it, even a slight decrease in pressure and flow caused by a weaker pump could cause your cooling system to not function the way it was designed to. If I was you, I'd go with a Stewart water pump like another member posted, if you go electric, your most likely looking for problems be it next week or next year.

FWIW I replaced my Aerospace Engineering electric with a Stewart Stage I because the electric was just too problematic.

My friend has a 91 rs (383 super ram tpi). He uses electric water pump, and electric fan. Been running both for about 2 years. Still problem free. He told me he thinks he freed up a good 20-30 hp. I was a "noticeable difference."
I my self have not tried either one yet, but i plan to. But i guess what works for some doesn't work for all.

20-30 HP increase? Well, well, well. Why even mess with headers and a cat back exhaust system, just get an electric water pump.
Must came with a big sticker...........

LOL yeah....... cause the power to run all that electric crap is coming from your alternator which is gonna working a lot harder wtih the more crap you put on.

not really. they only draw about 5-6 amps or so.

Everyone needs to update their information. Meziere electric pumps last for about 2500 hours ... not 50. Do the math and if you drive your car 2 hours every single day then it will last 3.5 years.

LT1 guys use Meziere electric water pumps all the time on the street. No problems. Meziere also now offers their heavy duty water pump outfitted with an idler pulley for a bolt-in installation in factory TPI serpentine setups. The price is very high but it's a cool piece of equipment.

see to me. if a electric fan motor can last me 14 years. and pull about the same amps as an electric water pump. then why can't an electric water pump last me 2 years? i mean it does probably see more heat.. but what doesnt

We build the pumps and to tell you the truth that's a good question. The reason the fan motors last longer is the cooling fans don't get the heat or vibration. If we could figure out how to expose the motor to cooler air without exposinging it to harmful elements they would last longer.... good question Breathment. To the guy who thinks a mechanical (even a Stewart stage 4) flows as much water at idle... wrong. We have tested them the stage 4 flows about 4-6 GMP at idle the high flow Meziere flows 55 GPM the crossover (that is the spot the stewart reaches the Meziere) is about 4500 RPM. The Stage 4 pump is built for engines operating in the 6 to 9000 RPM range great for road race and NASCAR not street cars. Stewart makes pumps that would be better suited. Don't misunderstand me, they make a good product just buy the right one. I have been running a Meziere WP321 (that is the one for serpentine belt) on my 92 Formula for almost a year.... I'll never put a mechanical back on..
