Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan - 4600 cfm!
Has anyone retrofitted a factory Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan to their F-body? I have heard of Mustang guys using this setup, as the stock Mark VIII fan supposedly pushes 4600 cfm of air- which may be the most of any stock electric fan setup.
I'd like to know what is involved as far as wiring it up (what gauge wire, what kind of relay, etc.) to do this swap. Thanks.

I've replaced a few of those in the past few years. I can tell you they are not cheap - around $300 I believe. And they are single fans at that...

82 Beater- I haven't installed mine yet but I believe the install instructions/fuse size, etc are in the article.

considering that some of the best aftermarket fans blow 1600-2000 cfm, 4600 from a stock fan has me very skeptical.

Here's a pic next to the car so you can get an idea how big it is...
The main part with the shroud measures 22"W x 19"H and the mounting tabs stick out to 26"- they might have to be trimmed off and alternate mounting methods used.

I still can't see that moving as much air as some of the aftermarket 16" fan kits, which all claim around 1800-2200cfm.

I just checked one at work today. On high speed it doesn't seem to push anymore air than any other fan I've seen. Granted this is judging by hand... I do know for a fact it doesn't move anywhere NEAR as much as my Flex-A-Lite Black Magic 150!

Conversion complete.
This thing is amazing. Just with itself on, it turns the two 14" pusher fans that I have in front of the condensor! Pics to follow, probably on a seperate post.

I would love to see pics of that install! Temp creeps up while sitting ever since the blower install, had to swap one of my stock fans for a low profile aftermarket. Been considering the swap but wasn't sure if I could make it fit with the blower setup.

Here's a few quick pictures, I had to do some cutting to get it to fit in there, pretty much just the small lip at the bottom of the radiator tray that the stock fan mount bolts to. Be sure to watch out where that sawzall blade is going if you cut it with the radiator in the car.
(oops) On another note, I have to take some more pictures of the wiring, this thing sucks up LOTS of power. I ended up using a wells type 496 starter soleniod for a HD relay, a little overkill but works out great and you can't beat the price. Most folks say go with a 75A relay or better, so I figured I would go better for 20% of the cost.
There is just alot of amperage that has to pass through there and you don't want to have a melt down. You will also need a beefy fuse and 10 ga wiring or better. (It blows right through a 30a) The cooling setup I am running now is pretty much extreme overkill as far as I can tell. I have all 3 fans powering up when the key goes to "on". I plan on adding a temp switch rated at about 170* that will control the mk viii fan. For now I will probably move it to a toggle switch.
The two 14" fans in the front also will not fit with out trimming the sides of the radiator/condensor surround, but it's pretty strait forward.
Don't mind the mess underhood in the pictures, I also did a serpentine conversion and installed my SLP headers while I was in there. I guess I got a little carried away. (I was supposed to only be replacing the distributor...)

... and side view number 2.
If anyone whines about bandwith on the multi-pictures I will remote host them, but the data footprint is tiny so I didn't think it would be a big deal.
Also, I am NOT sure wether this setup will fit under a stock camaro hood with the TPI airbox in stock form, I have a cervini's cowl hood which has extra clearance up there so it was not an issue for me. It looks like just the forward edge of the underside of the box would need a little trimming, but that should be about it. Hope this helps and lemme know how it's going!
If you can't turn up a mk viii fan (It's a pickle) you can use the fan from a 94-97 4.6L tbird or cougar, they are 18" as well but do not flow nearly as good. Still, would be a step in the right direction from a thirdgen fan setup.
I have my bone stock 4.6L tbird out in 100+ degree days in dead stop DC beltway traffic with the a/c on full boggie, and it never really gets past half way on the temp gauge. I think the cooling setup is a good bit different, but you get the idea.
(BTW I have a spare mk viii fan if you are looking for one)

Rest assured I'm not gonna criticize your underhood mess, just look at some of the pics of my custom blower install
Looks like it probably wont fit with my blower setup, it is close though. Do you have any measurements on just how deep the whole setup is?

Mark,
I will try to measure it out tonight, it's not really quite as tight as it looks in the pictures. You do have some room to move the bump of the fan motor around, and it's asymetrical so you can turn it over the other way to help with clearance issues.
Dude,
The hot air still goes where it did with the old fan setup, towards the motor/ground. With the fans off there is not alot of room for air to blow itself into the radiator, but if the fans are off you would still be trying to warm up anyway so that's not a bad thing.
Demon,
Yep, it's pretty loud compared to the stock dual fans, but with the hood closed it's really not bad at all. You can't hear it over the car anyways when it's running.
