Help! Need to buy a new water pump from Summit Racing. Which one?

Hi there,

I need to buy a new water pump for my 1989 GTA with the 350ci TPI engine, and I need to be able to buy it from Summit Racing as I'm ordering a 'batch' of parts from them in the next week.

From searching I realise I need a reverse rotation long style water pump.

I would prefer it be aluminum, polished and high volume.

Would any of these be suitable?

Summit Part No:- EDL-88812.

Summit Part No:- EMP-23123

Summit Part No:- EDL-88814.

Many thanks for any help you can offer!

Gordon

I'd probably go with the Stewart. I don't have any personal experience with Edelbrock pumps, but I've heard of quality problems with them.

I would order a water pump from jegs right now because there cheaper by about 10 -20 dollars on alot of items. They say they won't be undersold.

I'll ask Summit to price match it for me! Shouldn't be a problem, considering the $2000 I'm going to be spending there in the next week.

I'm going to order the Stewart and will let you know what I think of it.

Thanks guys.

Dr G, what are your plans with the $2000.00? Not trying to be nosey, but I remember you asking about an MSD distributor in another thread. Building somthing nice?

BTW, Stewart is the one to go with IMO.

Brutal, there's no problem! These boards are all about being nosey!!

What happenned was the stock original 41K mile L98 engine in my GTA dropped a valve a few months back. It rammed through a piston and scored the cylinder bore right into a waterway. So I need to pick up a new basic engine or block/bottom end and a few accessories like water pump and new distributor.

It's all been a real pain to be honest and the problem is that where I am in the UK, you can't just pick up a second hand 350 from a junk yard the way you can in the States. Even a second hand 305 in unknown condition costs more than $1000, an L98 350 can cost up to $3000, which is crazy.

I'm ordering everything from Summit Racing to keep things simple, including the international shipment, customs clearance and so on........

I just need this car back on the road... the damn engine failure has really screwed my plans up for the long term and will mean that 'big power' will have to wait a few years.

Best wishes!

P.S. So do you think the distributor will be a good one to go for?

Distributors are pretty durable. I have yet to replace one.

Have you considered a 383 shortblock and/or a hotter cam?

Did the valve jazz up the head as well?

I'm in the middle of a budget 383 rebuild on an L98. I'm reusing the 5.7" rods, and putting in a ZZ4 cam, and new 30lb injectors. Should be a fun daily driver I fully intend to reuse the stock distributor.

L98 heads will be mildly ported and valve size stock. Intake will be a mildly ported stock TPI. I have a few urban legends about stock TPI to disprove. LOL

Cool! When mine decides to take a dump (stock cast), I will be replacing it with a Stewart as well.

Any one have any feedback on this aluminum pump? I know, I know, Ebay and all that....

The use would be for a CMC car.

Brutalform and others:- The Stewart is lovely looking, light, well packaged and works really well even with underdrive pulleys. I recommend it without reservation.

Good to know. I just replaced my SuperRam with a converted intake, and now I can really see my ugly, silver, (tried to get the aluminum look),painted, cast pump. Hmmmmm...maybe now is a good time to replace mine as well. BTW, any idea how much your Stewart weighs? Be nice to remove even more weight in the process.

Brutal:- I don't have the exact figures to hand but it was definitely several kilos lighter. I can measure it if you wish, but rest assured it was a very easily noticeable difference when comparing them before installation.
