Torque Converter Cover And Cooling

I was looking on another forum and the discussion was about whether or not to run a torque converter cover. Some wanted to cut the ears off for more clearance and not use the cover.

Anyways this got me to thinking about those of us running a high stall torque converter and the cover. We all know that a high stall torque converter will increase the temperature of the transmission fluid and better cooling is needed with an add on transmission cooler.

For those of us using a cover my thought was to cut some holes in the front of the cover and the rear of the cover so some air will flow though the cover to aid in cooling. I would cover the holes with screen to keep debris out of the cover. Just wondering if anyone has some thoughts on the subject. I think I'm going to do it when Don is putting in my new motor.

Re: Torque Converter Cover And Cooling

doubt it would make any difference, It might draw out some heat but probably not going to cool any of the fluid down.

Re: Torque Converter Cover And Cooling

I saw a cover in a Year One catalog that had some scoops on the bottom of it. Seemed like an interesting idea but I need all the ground clearance I can get and I can't justify spending $100 on something like that.

That thin plastic or metal dust shield is not holding any heat.

Maybe not. I was just wondering if some air was flowing around the torque converter if that would be beneficial to some degree.

Thanks Gumby but I'm also a participant in the other post. I'm just mulling over the thought. I have a big transmission cooler on order.

Re: Torque Converter Cover And Cooling

letting air get to it might help but it there to keep dust n crap out
[AKA dust shield], if you only drive on nice paved roads, and won't be in snow, it probably won't hurt anything, will it help, dunno.

only a back to back test with a temp gauge will tell.

Though one thing is it would suck if a cat crawled up in there

Or say something on the road flys up in there, plastic bag, rope, old fan belt getting jammed up n wrapped up........

So true and that is why I was thinking of putting screens over the holes if I decide to do it.
