clutch fan and tpi

Has anyone converted to a mechanical fan on their TPI?

Re: clutch fan and tpi

Not sure what my deal was.

I've actually thought about it, but I feel like it would rob engine power and make a belt setup a pain. I think my idea was maybe have the fans running all the time so it would run cooler but then I realized I could have a lower temp fan switch.

Not sure why you would do that. The electric fan is not cooling enough?

Re: clutch fan and tpi

My problem is the factory dual fan setup with both fans set to turn on at 185 does not handle the heat well in the summer with the AC on. Everything works well even when its 100 out without the AC on. In traffic with the AC on it has hit 240 before I turned it off when it usually runs somewhere near 185. Everything in the AC and cooling system has been replaced in the past few years and is in good condition.
My clutch fan thought is based on an affordable fix. Clutch fans with heavy duty clutches generally cool well at idle and low speeds. I dont really care about a slight loss from the drag. Its loosing power right now from running hot and I care more about the AC than HP. I did a bit more research after the original post and there is no way the carb engine shroud and fan will fit with the air intake tube and maf in the way.

How clean is your condenser? Has that been replaced as well?

Clutch fans are outdated technology. The only remaining aplications for them are vehicles that could see off road water conditions (trucks). Trouble shoot the electrics and I think you will be happier with your set up.

Totally agree. Dual fans will provide much better cooling than a mechanical clutching fan. And without a shroud, it will be really bad.

Re: clutch fan and tpi

On a tpi fan system, usually there are dual fans, Driver's side fan is set to come on around 222 degrees and the passenger side fan comes on around 238 degrees or so. That is how it is set up to run from the factory. I recommend you get an aftermarket fan switch for the passenger side fan. Something like a on/200 and off at 185.

Re: clutch fan and tpi

plus having an electric fan usually gains you back around 15hp. A clutch fan would steal hp

Re: clutch fan and tpi

The condenser is clean and only two years old.

The fans are set to turn on at 185 and when your system is incapable of cooling it wont matter when they turn on the results will be the same.

The clutch fan and shroud are no more out dated than the car itself. The 15hp story is mostly hype, its more like half that.

It looks like my only option is to obtain a different fan setup from the bone yard or summit.

How did you set the fans to come on at 185? Did you get your prom re-burned. Yes a fan switch from Hypertech etc will turn on the passenger side fan at 185 if you purchase one. Also, what are you talking about the system being incapable of cooling it? If your thermo is open at 160 or at 180 Then the fan coming on at 185 is fine. That will cool the system fine.

The prom was changed to turn fans on at 185. Both fans are wired for ecu control. The system is incapable of keeping the engine cool with the AC on when its near 90 - 100 out. The factory fans do not pull enough air and the temperature will keep rising in traffic.

ok i see. I take it u are using a 180 stat or lower? Ok, then u should check out the threads about the Ford Taurus 3.8 L fan. Probably better than most aftermarket fans too. U can get one at a junkyard cheap!
