Engine Oil Cooler

I put my car on a lift yesterday to adjust the emergency brake cable and found that the engine oil cooler is just sitting in front of my radiator. The thing is not even bolted or held down by any fasteners. Who does this crap?! This led me to look further into the cooling system and i found some weird things. I attached a picture that shows the hoses run to the radiator ... again, who does this crap!?! I need your help!

1. Where is the cooler supposed to be mounted in the radiator area
2.This oil lines are obviously not stock, what are they supposed to be attached to?

Does anyone have pictures of the stock setup and where i can attain to hardware to mount this properly?

Thank you,

James

Re: Engine Oil Cooler

That's not an engine oil cooler, that is a transmission oil cooler. Someone did this exact thing in you pictures to my GTA a few years ago and when I bought it last year, it was leaking bad. I ripped the whole thing out and reconnected the hard lines to the cooler as it was from the factory. I would also be interested in a GOOD way to install a transmission oil cooler...

Re: Engine Oil Cooler

That's not engine oil. It's an add-on aftermarket transmission fluid cooler.

They come with basically tie-wraps to hold them on. Pretty weenie usually.

Re: Engine Oil Cooler

That looks like its a supplement trans cooler not engine oil cooler, cars with oil cooler have coolant running to them Ala "sandwich style" between oil filter and the block. And to answer your question of who does this?-Lazy people

Re: Engine Oil Cooler

I traced the lines; it has two metal lines that originate where my oil filter is mounted (shown) and run up to the radiator.

Re: Engine Oil Cooler

Regardless - the lines you pictured in your first post are transmission cooler lines.

The oil cooler has coolant running through those lines, not oil.

You need to look closer at what is actually happening.

Yep you're right.... Do you know where these lines go or what actual fitting they are supposed to screw into? That looks like dog crap.. That isnt factory, is it?

Do you have an image of how you ran and where you ran your hard lines that you can share?

That looks like dog crap.
I wouldn't degrade perfectly good organic fertilizer that way. That … what whoever did to your car … doesn't deserve the comparison.

That isnt factory, is it?
I believe someone brought up a point earlier:

It's an add-on aftermarket transmission fluid cooler.
LOOK closely at those lines.

Note that the steel line hooked to the rubber line has a threaded thing on it.

Note that the other one, that appears to sort of hook to the radiator, is actually hooked to a part that threads into the radiator.

Remove the part from the radiator that the hose is hooked to, leaving behind the part that looks green. Remove the hose from the steel line.

Note that the fitting - the threaded thing on the steel line - now exposed, will screw right directly back into the hole that you just made in the radiator, that it came from.

That was how it came, factory.

Re: Engine Oil Cooler

Great! I don't mean to sound like an idiot and although I am by no means a mechanic, I'm giving it a good effort.

I guess i should clarify the "Is this factory? question" .. I LOOKED at the hoses and "i realize that the shade tree hoses aren't factory" which raises my factory question - Do guys believe that if it was factory at some point, some knucklehead removed the proper fittings and brackets and did this? If so, where can i get the proper fittings to reconnect these lines appropriately? If not, should I just remove the whole cooler? I haven't had any transmission issues since I've had the car.

I appreciate the advise not the sarcasm.

It's not factory.

The kits are generic. No brackets, just some ziptie retainers as sofa mentioned. You're not missing anything. If you want to keep it, work on a better installation. Otherwise, ditch it and put it back the way it was made.

Re: Engine Oil Cooler

Or..... here's my setup (I don't use the cooler in the radiator):

I have two coolers there - the finned extruded black aluminum tube, and the more conventional B&M super cooler. They are looped together. My trans temps haven't exceeded 170 degrees and usually run 150. Typical stock cooler trans temps are likely closer to 250 with the coolant temp being managed around 225.
