Oil Cooler

I picked up a Vortec 350 to put in my 84.

It has this oil cooler attached to it, from what I can find it was designed to run to a cooler in the radiator, like the transmission lines do.

Does anyone know much about these units?

Is there a thermostatic valve built in, or did it just rely on running through a warm radiator to ensure it didn't get the oil to cold?

Does this unit have any advantage to a cheap sandwich adapter?

I wouldn't mind running it to an external cooler, but don't really want to mess with having to plumb a valve.

Thank you.

Re: Oil Cooler

To the best of my knowledge, there is no thermostatic valve in that unit, it just goes to the radiator.

You could run the lines to an air/ oil cooler if you wanted; GM has done it before.

Re: Oil Cooler

If I recall they leak a lot!

Some 3rd gwens had oil coolers that went to the radiator...perhaps you can find a radiator and plumb like stock?

Re: Oil Cooler

I did see a radiator GM 21466 that has the cooler, but it is 250, and my radiator is only about a year old.
