Chip? (sorry its kinda long)

I have a 1986 Trans Am that had an LB9 305 TPI with the 700R4 tranny. I recently put in a 350 TPI with a mild cam and 21lb fuel injectors. Every place i have called (pontiac dealers, jetchip, honest performance, and a place that does custom chips) all said that i need a custom chip. The pontiac dealer said that he does't know wich stock replacemet chip i would need so he said it would be best to go with a custom one. Jet Chip said that their chip is just an ad-on and i need a custom one to make it run right. I guess thats why my milage sucks, the tranny doesn't kick down from overdrive to passing gear when stomped on, and just lack of power. I should have 275HP but it doesn't feel like it. The engine i put in was a "New Rebuilt". It has around 500 miles on it now. Any ideas? The custom chip is going to cost me $600 and i dont want to spend that if i dont have too. Thanks in advance!

I have a good friend that runs a 10:1 355 with edelbrock heads, stealth ram intake, SLP cam (224/230 @ .50 .502/.510 lift) headers, no emmisions, cold air intake and the list of mods goes on and on. All it has is a jet chip in it. I think the MAF cars are much more forgiving than people think...because his car (and mine before I built the current carb'd setup) idle and drive fine. His car has went 12.3 @ 113...sounds pretty good to me!

Why would 95% of the people i talk to even Jet Performance and the pontiac dealers say that i need a custom chip? They say the ECM is the same but the Chip (EPROM) is different even on an MAF car. I really confused need to find out what is really going on. When i start it up (cold) it doesn't go to its cold start mode, the RPM's go up and down between 500 and 850. Everything i have said to everyone seems to lead back to the chip. What do you guys think i should do? Thanks!

for optimum performance and economy as well as emisions you should get a custom chip. other than that if your happy with it performing at less than its best stick with what youve got. ooh and bruning your own proms is fun and can be alot cheaper than a custom chip.

check here for a programmer.

www.ustr.net

go here for ECM hardware and scannign sofwtare

www.moates.net

goto

www.akmcables.com for a good diagnostic cable

goto www.tunercat.com for sowftare to edit the chip you can burn and replace with al of the above mentioned links.

btw if you car ir realy and 87 the program id byte could be either a $32 $32b so you will need to find this out first. email tunercat they should be able to help you for sure. or if ydont want to undertake tunning your own eproms get out teh phone book and ask around. competent tuners are hard to find.

I talked to a high performance mechanic and he said that i should get a new ECM from a 87 GTA with the 5.7 TPI auto with over drive from a wrecking yard and then put in a Hypertech chip. What Hypertech chip would i need with a mild cam and a 180* thermostat? On hypertech's webpage they said the street runner is for stock vehicals using the stock thermostat. So i would need the "Thermo Master" chip?
