Have been looking for info on stock 87 Iroc air box and how much cfms it can flow. Called K&M and some other corp. and they said they lost info when they installed new dynos. If any one has any info on this,I would love to know,or if you have any idea where to find this info please let me know. Thanks

ive been wondering this for a looong time.
Am very surprised that no one has stuck on of those horribly restrictive air boxes on a flow bench and see how much cfm itll actually flow.
regardless its very restrictive tho.
my plans include relocating the battery to the trunk and then running a CAI to the battery tray area

On my 87 air boxes when I went with my MiniRam according to TPIS tips and hints, they show you how to
modify the boxes for better flow.
They picked up some CFM doing that and also by removing
trash screen in the MAF. They don't recommend total air box mods if driven in heavy rain for obvious reasons
Figured cooler air from front of car better than CAI under the hood hot air.
Did both on mine but don't if it helped or not.

I went to the link z28jari put up and it was good. The motor used was larger and more HP and they had no problem with the air box only the stock rubber duct. Its a good read if you get time.

just cause it made good power doesnt mean there wasnt more hp to be gained from a less restrictive intake box

thats very nice im impressed, had been thinking about for a while now hacking up the stock piece and fibergalssing into it or something
also wondering i have another thread about hood pins and possibly cutting out my stock latch, wonder if i cut out the stock latch and area by it if i could run an l1 air lid. have to relocate the bumper support but thats not the end of the world

Don't think with all the engineering, time and fabrication
that your going to see any big gains.
In our MAF cars, the MAF sensor is the restriction, but not
as bad as been claimed. Alot of MAF cars making big power.
As to ram effect not going to happen until speed you'll
never see and with the filters out.
Cool air and
opening up the box base logical way to go.
I took the baffles out and cut out the base bottom, MAF
descreened, fins left in, fogs out, and nice screening behind
foglite opening.(Birds) and good to go.
Plus extra cooling for AT cooler and radiator.
Just a thought

i dont think anyone was claiming ram air, the factory air box is in a good spot because it picks up cold air before the rad, however just by looking at where it pinches thing right before going over the rad support, you can see just looking at it that that would be a restriction

But,
If you look at the cross sectional width of both sides,
not all that small.
IMHO

maybe thats true, kind of what htis post is all about. realistically we need flow bench data on it to ever know for sure, if it turns out its not restrictive that would also be very good to know

Agree,
But unless your talking major HP, with a MAF, which he has, your talking another direction anyway.
Just trying to offer him an easy, proven way to go.
Plus some cooling issues do come into effect with our
cars. Not all air for cooling comes from under the car.
Thats why they left openings behind the fog lites.

YUP

In your case-battery in trunk.
Tubing out to rad support.
CAI other side.
But you know that.
