85-88 ECM swap, maybe a simple question?
What do I do with the big fuel pump relay? will that stay connected and i just add the 88 wires to the MAS/ECM or do I need to use the new fuel pump relay? I didn't find much about it in a search and the instructions in the tech article doesn't seem to mention it but it has the picture of all three relays being swapped.
I have the wires/relays for all three to be connected and i was just going to bolt them under the dash

you can leave the fuel pump relay where it is but the newer style weather pack connecter and relay is a good upgrade.

Ok thanks, I just wanted to be sure since there seem to be far more wires going to that relay than the 4? going to the new one i could be wrong and it just looked that way.

yes there are 5 wires going to the fuel pump relay

Re: 85-88 ECM swap, maybe a simple question?
So I noticed there was no "B" on my 88 relay connectors so i matched up the colors with what was on an 87 harness I had... but it wont fire?
I get the fuel pump and i can hear the maf power relay click, I checked that I have the B4-D4 correct so i'd think it would fire?
my fan turns on with the key at on/run (i think thats the AC flag though) I used the $6E mask with the ARAP bin from moates website and only enabled highway mode and the digital maf mode
any ideas on what i did wrong? I'll check that I have everything hooked up on the computer again tomorrow

did you change the programing switch for the fan switch on d11 being normally closed from normally open ? Is vats disabled ?

in TP v5 I have the "VATS Enable" unchecked and i have "Cooling Fan N/O Req Input" unchecked as well and the "Analog MAF Meter in use (HLM)" unchecked

The car will run even with the maf unplugged. check the basics first, do you have spark, injector pulse , fuel pressure. Was this just a ecm upgraded ?

Re: 85-88 ECM swap, maybe a simple question?
I'm just going by what the XDF says the bit is I'm very clueless on how these computer's work
I'm using a mcumall programmer (i use/used it to burn chips for my 85 and my friend's 90 TPI) and I used the wrong offset, I'd set the "file offset" not the "device offset" so i was attempting to start the car with a blank chip I... derped
I tried again with the correct offset and i got it to fire, it didn't run great but the tuning is probably off seemed really rich (low idle vacuum from my cam, if i remember right its 12inHg?)
I didn't really hook up my computer exactly how it was suggested in the instructions, I'll make sure its all working and post what i did when i know its working.
(i just used the power/ground from the MAS module instead of splicing to the computer It looked like it wouldn't make a difference)

Re: 85-88 ECM swap, maybe a simple question?
I adjusted my fuel pressure(45Psi w/o vacuum around 39-40 at idle) and replaced the filter, though my fuel pump may be on its way out.
I had a few strange check engine lights for the week i was driving it (just took it out of storage) and it wasn't running all that great even with new gas.
I'll also probably get new fuel injectors they look like the original 19# injectors and that's what i set the flow rate on the tune but they could just be stock 22# injectors from something else. They are not Bosch 3's but they are yellow? I'll switch it back to 22# on the chip first since its running rich.
I know with the 85 computer/my tune it was always rich at idle and lean up top at WOT even when i changed the injector BPW at the top.
the best it ever ran was with the timing cleaned up (wasn't a stock tune) and the computer's temp sensor shorted and was reading 999 degrees... i got 17 mpg on my daily drive and had the most responsiveness/power feel with a consistent 600rpm idle.
But i was never able to get the car back to that with my tuning and i couldn't figure out what temp scalar was preventing it

Re: 85-88 ECM swap, maybe a simple question?
my changes were instead of B1 for power I used MAS A and instead of D3 for ground i used MAS E not really special it looks like MAS A goes to B1 anyway

Re: 85-88 ECM swap, maybe a simple question?
So i set the injector flow rate to 24 and now its running well, 22 allowed it to start but it was extremely rich. I am getting a code 41 now though?

Check your memcal for being seated and hopefully you are using a tpi maf memcal. Double check your eeprom offset sounds like it might have been burned incorrectly.

Re: 85-88 ECM swap, maybe a simple question?
I don't have a memcal/I have one from an S10(4 cyl) i was going to modify. I bought the GP1 from moates instead and i've been using a 00C000 offset on the chip (SST27SF512).
I checked my fuel pressure again, with the pump off it drops pretty fast, and the car wont really run unless i set the pressure below 30Psi so i'm guessing i have an injector stuck open on the passenger side (opposite my O2). I bought bosch 3 22# injectors from SB. since it was also not running well with out lower fuel pressure before

Re: 85-88 ECM swap, maybe a simple question?
The cylinder select for a four cylinder is not going to work. you have the offset correct
00C000 -> 00FFFF but you need the correct memcal for cylinder select. cylinder select will also effect injector pw. If your wanting to purchase a tpi maf memcal I have some and can reprogram one for you pm me if interested.A zif will give you issues long term but for tuning it will work fine . You can solder in a d2 dip onto a memcal or use a g1.

Re: 85-88 ECM swap, maybe a simple question?
Ground pin 56 to set it for 8-cylinder injector firing rate. That will also fix code 41, which is a cylinder select error.

Re: 85-88 ECM swap, maybe a simple question?
which side/way do I start counting from to find pin 56?
After i looked up the code 41 i'd plugged that memcal into the GP1, it ran the same with it plugged in or not, if that helps any. I have the cylinder select? scalar set to 00 on the chips i've been burning

Disregard the esc

Just ground 56 on the memcal, lhm will suffer is the only drawback if that event ever occurs.

Re: 85-88 ECM swap, maybe a simple question?
the 85 computer's LHM essentially shut the engine off (it would idle and not react to anything) so i'm accustomed to a useless LHM... which happened a lot, i have another thread from a year or two ago on the 33 errors i use to get and possible solutions/causes but the mystery was never solved...

Re: 85-88 ECM swap, maybe a simple question?
Grounding the memcal had no effect? check engine light is still on still not really running. the eprom on my memcal seems shifted over to the left of where yours is in the picture?
Setting the injector flow rate to anything more than 24 makes it not run and 22 or 24 I have a huge cloud of black and a barely running car, I need to keep my foot on the gas a bit and the car shakes quite violently.
Unless i lower my fuel pressure below 30, I could keep it running and see if a header tube stays semi cool? I have an infra red thermometer

I dont think your following. On the memcal solder in a jumper from 56 to 62.

Re: 85-88 ECM swap, maybe a simple question?
I can solder the paperclip piece i cut/bent in, i'd tried taping it in with electrical tape, may not have worked. but the chip in the memcal i have is shifted over by one. I bridged mine like you have in the picture as in 56 -62 but 62 is where my 3rd eprom pin on that side is not the second? I hope I'm making sense

Here is one I made this morning with a flash eeprom and a 3.1l memcal with the esc removed.

AHA!! that explains why it didn't do anything, I didn't think it made sense to put the short on the eprom!! I'm glad you haven't gotten frustrated with me yet...

Re: 85-88 ECM swap, maybe a simple question?
soldered in paperclip to the rescue!! it runs better but still far too rich with the injectors set at 24#, i tried just using an unmodified version of the arap bin i started with but it wouldn't start so i'll just have to see when i get those new injectors
but the code 41 is gone at least!! thanks a ton, now i need to figure out how to put up those pictures

that would make sense, it seems to be running alright with no trouble codes, I'll try a datalog and see if the readings from the maf make sense
