Thorlis,
There are many scanners that will work with your car. Some of the most popular are Diacom (laptop scanner) and AutoXRay (cheap and easy handheld scanner). There are several other types available. However, the biggest question that you need to ask would be how much money do you want to spend.
The '89 ECM is not a direct swap. Your car runs a different ECM.

id suggest swapping to a 1227747 ecm as its been totally hacked. Youll just need to cut a couple wires and swap one wire. Ill have to look at my ecm and what I did to tell you which ones to swap because its the same for the 8063 ecm to 7747 as it is for the 746 to 7747
secondly, i wouldnt put too much stock into an ALDL scanner for your car. Ive been programming chips for quite some time with NO scanner at all. The aldl data stream that your camAro produces is only 300 baud
so if you put a scanner on your car youll only get maybe three frames of information on a 0-60 run and forget about trying to use it while you are cruising around. My suggestion to you is to get an LED air fuel ratio gauge, and build a knock detector. Essentially thats all you need along with a vacuum gauge. I've also employed an EGT which is an excellent tool aswell.

Thanks, I've already built the air/fuel and knock guages. I was thinking of swaping to the 89 tbi computer because ithe haynes manual i was looking at showed the pin assignments for the car but didn't list any differences from year to year so i thought a 89 tbi computer would just plug right in and keep the emission stuff that the 747 truck ecm doesn't have. I was looking at Tunercat and they support the 89 but not the 88 computer. whats you're opinion on the Tunercat software? I have the 747 pinout too.

Thorlis,
TunerCat is good program BUT, MANY people have experienced problems with some of their calibration files. Pablo is a GREAT reference for this. I can tell you that the calibration file in TunerCat for the 730 ECM is perfect. BUT, I believe that Pablo experienced MAJOR discrepencies with the calibration file for the 747. Pablo?

All Natural. No Force. No Drugs. Stock Bottom End. Stock Body Panels. Stock Wheels. No Weight Reduction.
Gunning for NA 11's with the MiniRam II and Hooker LT Headers.

no not the 747, the 746 file of theirs had problems but i believe they have since been corrected. Essentially its basically the same as the 747 except you have more things you can play with in the 747 since its all been hacked unlike the 746. I really could have kept the 746 and probably been better off but i got frustrated with an unrelated problem and threw an ecm at it hoping it would cure it. One thing about the 746 thats better than the 747 (actually two things that i know of ) is that the 746 uses an IAT, and that the 746 has a lean cruise mode. I dont think you could go wrong with either one really

Awwwww, ****. TunerCat doesn't support the '88 TBI cars? I've ordered all the hardware stuff to start programming my own chips (to fix my intake backfire). Does it not work at all? Will I be able to tune the "pump shot"? Does anybody's software work with the '88 TBI cars? Why does this always happen to me?

The '88 ECM saw limited use. I don't believe there are any editors out there for it.
Not to worry Mark, like Pablo said the 747 ecm will work with some minor wire changes. The 747 should be obtainable from a junkyard for $25-50.

I've searched everywhere that I can think of looking for wiring diagrams for the ECUs. I can't find any. Does anybody have the details of this mysterious wire swapping that has to be done to make the 7747 computer work? If somebody can help me, I'm thinking of going and picking up the 7747 ECU this afternoon. Thankz.
