can chips go bad.........
my question is can the chips go bad when left erased?
A few weeks ago I erased two chips and left them in the Datarase II's storage area. now I wanted to program them and both came up with errors. so I checked and they now are not erased. so I tried to erase them again and again but, still no luck. also I tryed to read the hypertech chip I have and now it has an error when I try and read in in tunner cat. I thought the hypertech chip may have seen some sun light because I left that on the desk(oops) but, what about the other chips are they bad? or did the pocket programmer take a $#!+ ?

Maybe you are not using the proper eprom with your programmer to change them or you haven't erased them long enough.
I found my 27C256s liked about 15 mintues to properly erase them. The amount of erasing time differs from the type of eprom you are using and the manufacturer of the eprom too.
As for eproms going bad, they will eventually hit a point when they have been erased "one time too many". Eproms can only be exposed to UV light for so long before they can no longer be used.

Make sure the pocket programmer is plugged in to the wall outlet. I catch myself doing this after not using for awhile.

I kept checking and it is set for the right e-prom. also I must have about 40 min in it now trying to make sure they have been erased. I even tryed the programmer on my lap top which also worked before. tryed differant outlets and still nothing the converter does get worm like they all do so that is getting power for sure.
maybe I will e-mail them tomarrow and see if there is a way to check it before I try to send it in. or order a chip.

Is it possible to wreck the eprom by leaving it in the programmer while not in use but still plugged in? I think this is what I did because I pulled my Jet chip put it in the programmer, read it, saved it, and then rushed to tunercat to take a look but forgot to take the eprom out of the programmer. So then I took and erased it so I could burn in the ARAP bin and it wouldn't work, it just kept showing an error right as it started to program.
Thanks

interesting.
mine just wont erase I was under the impression that they won't wright again after being erased but, perhaps in my case it was the other way around.

has any one had an eprom go bad? what did it do?
my new gm chip should come in tomarrow but, this is just pissing me off. the programmer acts like it reads it but, says it is not erased and when I save it to file and try to verify it it says e-prom did not verify to file.

I have no experience with programing chips for cars but i have been going to school for computers for the last year and a half. I am doing the Cisco CCNA/CCNP cert. I also am A+ certified. In the A+ class they emphasised that you should protect ALL COMPUTER CHIPS from ESD! STATIC electricty which can cause dammage to the circuits so to avoid dammage, you put the chips in an esd bag and or make sure you are grounded when touching them. This does not mean you will destroy them if you touch them, but it is very possible. I'm not sure about rom chips or eprom's but this may be why your chip is not working right, maybe not? Not trying to make you worry, just giving you some valuable info.
