Simple Question

If you were running a modified engine with a unknown chip/tune 7730 L98 A4, and say it wasn't touched for said upgrades or dialed in close enough, injectors, airflow, etc, would the computer not set some sort of check engine light?

Would the computer not see say a "RICH" condition or "LEAN" and be so out of parameter it would throw a SES light if the BLM/INT was maxed out either way??

I have a 91 formula, 30lb injectors, zz4 crate with LT4 hot cam kit... Does fine, plenty of power, just runs a little rich at idle it seems, i plan to get a good look and see what all has been done "PROGRAMMING WISE" to it soon via the data logging stuff that came with it "RED DEVIL RIVER" cable, and Tunerpro RT, it also came with a brand new never installed wide band 02 b pillar pod also. I plan to take the info from the tuned chip and paste it into the new super 8D AUJP Tunerpro has now in their V5 definition, no reason not to....

Just wondering on the situation, i mean it is obviously in the parameters of the ecm if it's not setting any lights or error codes. Right? I mean it runs fine, no "SES/CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS", never goes over 160*, has fan setting to that also, PCM FOR LESS did the original tune.

I plan to start data logging soon, they have a Bluetooth USB lug in device and a android app for OBD 1 engines that data logs etc. But until then, i should be okay if it's not setting any lights right?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Simple Question

It takes a lot to throw a code 44 or 45 doesn’t mean it’s running right at all. A wideband gauge or datalog to swe how it’s running. Or read plugs but may not tell the whole story.

Re: Simple Question

right, yeah i plan to do or start some data logging.. I figured if it was out of parameter bad enough she would throw codes of some kind.... I plan to start logging soon enough. Maybe today some of parked warm up.

Re: Simple Question

Question, what does one need to just get a copy of the burned chip that is in it to see what all has been done?

I have tried looking in the F.A.Q stuff here but 90% of the links are bad/broken, i have a aldl to usb cable and it has a wideband 02 already installed, just need to install pod and hook it up, i can get the car to read via tuner pro rt live, but i want to just save the bin, and take a look at it, maybe find someone who can do burning to get me a good base tune or to try and tweak some on this one at least.

I have the original papers from the original tuner PCM FOR LESS, dude claims he has no copies that far back and only does 94+ when i got papers that shows otherwise.

Is there a way to have tunerpro rt to save the bin via the aldl cable hookup, or am i gonna have to grab a moates burner/reader and literally pull the chip? It has the jumper for it already installed with somewhat of a modded chip. Again, live readings aren't gonna tell me if the injector constant is set correctly or not, just if i am running rich/lean etc. Same with wide band.

I plan to upgrade whole computer system to the EBL P4 this year, but i just need to get ol girl safe or know that she is safe for now tune wise is all. So i can begin all other stuff i wanna do.

All info/help/knowledge appreciated.

P.S

If there happen to be anyone out there that already has a tuned chip for a SD 7730 computer that is setup with fastburns, LT4 Hotcam, and aftermarket tpi stuff, i am all ears $$$ Just sayin.....

Re: Simple Question

To read the chip you need a burner most use moates burn2. Not sure what you mean by you have a chip jumper a piggyback adapter? You can use a hdr1 to socket under the chip in piggyback or memcal.
tons of $8d tuning articles in the diy prom stickies.
ebl is a great choice or if you stick with chips look at super aujp.

Re: Simple Question

I got a cable with the car, red devil river deal, i can use it to look at live engine data. It already has the Moates g1 adapter. I was hoping i couldd somehow read the bin in the current burned chip via the cable without taking it out. Seems like that is a pipe dream.

Gonna have to get me a moates burner 2 it seems.

I think i wanna work with you on some tuning this spring and summer if ya want to @Tuned Performance , i will get a burner, learn to log, i know where a local dyno is, my base idea is to just make sure she is safe and okay to use temporarily, because she has some mods to go like a stealthram, DD Headers, 4" catback sinister, 9" 6 speed hawks conversion, and a procharger no doubt, unless the sorry aftermarket finally does right and makes a compact whipplecharger for a SBC GEN 1 like they do for everybody else in the world!

I will pm ya when i am ready, and thanks for the response, i truly appreciate it.

Just to clarify, in $8d a code 44 means the o2 sensor has remained below 199mv for 5 seconds (ie - not cycling). Code 45 same thing but above 699mv. There are no codes set if BLM goes below min or above max calibration settings. However, a reportable bit is set and BLM in all cells is set =128 which essentially places engine into OL which ceases any fuel adjustments.

Re: Simple Question

I appreciate it man..I plan to log some with it, gonna start with start and idle parked warm up, then some put putting around speed, then some different RPM pulls, etc.

I am guess WOT tuning is a completely different monster than low/mid rpm tuning eh?

It's smart to tune below WOT first without invoking PE so remain in CL, because that will give you an understanding of the VE values needed at the higher RPM/MAP. To tune WOT, would recommend installing WBo2. Hard to do otherwise.

Re: Simple Question

Got ya, yeah it's got a wideband already in pipe, i just got to hook up the new gauge and wire.

I don't plan to be the one do who "TUNES" it, i just worked with Tuned Performance and you guys to get the burning and datalogging Tunerpro and Burn 2 setup working enough to get a baseline setup for safe datalogging and use of the vehicle is all.

Now that we know she is safe to use/drive, data logging may begin. I will be planning on this soon, i changed all 8 plugs, well (7) that CYL 8 is a P.I.T.A even with edelbrock TES junk headers, before i tune though i wish to get that stealth ram installed and the dyno dons exhaust with 4" cat back, then really start tweaking it.

Btw... Is "GLOW SHIFT" Wide Band good gauges? It is what i have.. The Autometer pod it sits in. It's a digital one. The sensor itself i don't know as of yet.
