got the 140 amp police package alt on my 92Z 305

well I gave up on it cause I couldn't get the bracket to fight right on the alternator and dropped the car off at my mechanic's. He said that he had to grind the bracket and even grind the alternator down somewhat to get the bracket to wrap around the alternator properly. Now that its on, it fits no problem looks fine, and we used the same fan belt, plugged right in, I think he needed to change the brace on teh back of the alternator as well, cuz its in a box with the original alternator as parts he took off. (I always save em) I honestly have to say that I see no difference between this 140 amp alt, and the 90 amp one that was on there when I blast my stereo system (1200 watts rms kinda killed the first alternator at 19K miles)but I think thats due to the fact that my battery is in sad shape. To top it all off my starter has been spinning freely, it finally decided to take a nosedive at the mechanic's so I wound up with a new starter too. so 260 for the mechanic with parts an labor, and 200 after the alternator (no core charge)with 460, and the fact that I still need a battery, really lets me wonder what kinda problems go on with a car that is rarely used for 4-5 years.

A lot of us have problems with our electrical systems. This is something that is common with all cars, including Japanese cars. I've burned up several reman alternators, and have found no cure as of yet for dips in voltage when the car gets loaded. I was curious if the 140 amp alt from GM would be the cure, but I guess it isn't. I'm going to put in an underdrive pully on my alternator, and see if that helps. I already put in a new battery, no difference there. I also put in a reman that was 140 amp alternator, I have had more problems with it than the original alt before it died. Only other option is to start putting in fatter wires everywhere.

You probably actually mean an overdrive (smaller diameter than stock) pulley, which increases an alternators output capacity at a given rpm, relative to the stock diameter pulley, if you are trying to boost the alternator output at low rpm. An underdrive (larger diameter than stock) pulley slows the alternator down, which reduces its output capacity at a given rpm, relative to the stock diameter pulley.

You should start with the wire from the alt. to the battery. It should be 4 gauge at minimnum with a 140 amp alt.

ya know, it never dawned on me for the 4 guage, I remember when I switched the amp for my subs from 8-4 gauge it was a world of a difference, hopefully that'll do the trick.

Thanks

well the alternator has 140 amps stamped on it. took some time to look at the alt on dad's 96 buick roadmaster wagon thats 140 amps. and I looked at the alternator on my 2000 tahoe (old body style) that one actually has a police package, its another 140 amp. then again even my tahoe with 18K miles has flickering lights if you blast the heat quick, or even crank the stereo up all the way. I think my camaro needs an optima battery at this point, its eating delcos.
