Transmission won't know when to lock up the converter. I have heard that this can ruin a transmission. I have no personal experience to prove it though. Shift points will not be affected b/c it has nothing to do with a speed signal.

The ECM requires the speed signal for some other functionalities, too.

I'm running TPI on my 73 Chevy Truck.
No VSS.
Runs VERY well.

I've run my 84 Vette 5 years with no TCC lockup.
It shifts MUCH better without lockup.

TCC IS RECCOMENDED, however.

YMMV.

Hey VetNutJim,

Does your vette & truck have a manual or automatic transmission?

Kind of vague but, on some applications, the VSS input affects TCL (as said), IAC and ignition timing.
Generally, unplugging the vss will also cause the SES lamp to come on (ECM is 'seeing' a problem).
As far a the converter locking up.. it's mileage mainly and a little of helpiing keep the trans cooler since the converter doesn't slip when locked. Burning up the trans... doubtful.. the converter will not lockup anyways untill: a certain operating temp., unter WOT, or below 32mph (or close to that speed).

As far as running fine w/o... sure but, you can also unplug just about all sensors and the engine will still run (not well but,...), doesn't mean it's running as it should.

you have a electric speedo.. so your speedo wont work.

as mentioned you dont get torque converter lockup

and you will never see "highway mode" to save gas.

but the car will run fine... on a long hwy trip however, the trans will run hotter...

you unplugged the plug from the trans that looks like this one?

or did you unplug the other one?

why the heck do you want to drive without it connected anyway?

i unhooked that one in the pic, becase there is something wrong with the system, irratic engine speed while driving, it would constantly lock and unlock while at any speed sustaind, accelrating or slowing, unhooked it for diagnose and it was that, now i have to trace out which component it is, hopefully its the TPS, is that a common part to go out on that system??

nope.

it has two.

the 4 wire connector is on the front of the trans and is the power for the TCC lockup.

the pic i showed is the VSS. its two wires... yellow and red.

ohh ok casue the four wire one is what i disconnected and then my problem went away, either way from my understanding they work together in the tcc lock up along with the TPS and i believe in that group is where my problem is

What you disconnected was the wires for the TCC solenoid.
