CB Radios

I don't know if any of you guys like these or would put them in your car but I'm thinking about the idea. The Dukes got me hooked Would also like to see some pics of some antenna's on our cars. I was going to mount mine on the decklid right infront of the spoiler with an antenna that isn't 6 feet long, just something big enough that it doesn't look TOO tacky. With mounting the unit itself, I found that right beside the passenger seat and console is the perfect spot. The wires get hidden by the carpet and go directly into the back seating area. No one sits back there anyway. What are your guys thoughts?

I had a Cadillac Sedan back about 1980 that had an AM/FM/CB antenna right in the fender, and it retracted when the radio shut off. That would be the cleanest way to go. I wonder if they're still available. Lot's of GMs had them stock.

Some Camaros had them, too. The RPO was UP5 or UP6. There may be some available in the aftermarket.

Early Cadillacs are the most likely donors (in a wrecking yard) but stick with the digital ones. The older ones weren't as good. Even then, the radios have a bad habit of the digital display not working correctly. End up with bad "sections" where you can't read certain numbers. Then again, we are talking about 25 year old parts in some cases.

You could probably get them in about any GM car, both Corvettes and Oldsmobiles had them as options at least.

Don't forget, when setting up a CB, you've got to "match" the setup. I'm no expert, but I know you will kill CB's in short order if you don't.

get a aftermarket "rubberducky" antenna that uses suction cups, and stick it on the windshield when you need it.

almost invisible, and easily removeable.

i got mine from a radio shack on a road trip years ago.

no, not really... its just a small antenna, like a handheld CB has... and it sticks to the windshield with suction cups...

works for miles and miles... good on interstate roadtrips...

I currently have a CB going

I have a magnetic whip that I stick to what little roof i have. I put a soft felt pad under it to protect the paint. For the CB, I managed to get a fairly small one and tucked it between the seat and center console. The PA is under the goofy black thing by the hood latch. I'll snap a pic when I get the chance.

Much as I hated to, I put a Cobra in my 88, put next to console on passenger side as you're thinking. Mag base antenna on rear deck. All in all, looks like crap, but the necessity outweighs that. At least I can pull the antenna off when not needed. The Cobra is a top notch outfit, but costs a little much. Most CB experts will say a cheap radio and a good antenna is ok, but not the other way around. I'll snap a couple pictures tomorrow, time to go to work now.

I wasn't necessarily advocating installing an entire old factory CB/radio combo (the Caddy I had also had an 8-track). I was only suggesting the antenna, and supplying your own radio. 1981 Corvettes also had them. The trouble with those mini antennae is that there is usually no decent ground plane, so while reception might be O.K., transmission direction and effective wave are pretty poor. SWR tuning is alsmot impossible without a capacitor/choke bank to electrically trim the antenna, and this isn't always the most effective for transmission either.

I'm currently working on installing one into my 84 right now. (6/13) I have it mounted on the passenger side of the console. I bought an antenna that is glass mount and stuck it right at the top of the hatch and have it angled toward the back of the car. I think it looks decent there.

However, when the car is off the thing works great but when its running I get all kinds of interference from the motor. I can hear it reving threw the CB. I have to turn the sq. up to half at least to cover it and then i can only talk to someone that is within 20 feet of me.

I've been told it can catch interference from other electrical components such as the radio, amp, and whatever you might have in your vehicle. I'm still trying to figure out how to block this interference. If anyone has any ideas or has ran across this problem it would help me out.

My dad also has one of these radios in his truck, and with no additional aftermarket components to interfere, it appears the radio has likely "failed". Similar symptom, engine speed is directly linked to the interference. Everything short of the radio itself has been tested for the cause of the problem.

My vehicle, whether in its previous iteration carbed, or TPI as it is now, does not exhibit the same problem his does, with the same style radio.

interesting .... guess i'll have to find another CB and see if it has the same interference or if something else is wrong....

I have the same problem, I have to turn the squelch up more than half way to get rid of the interferance from the engine. I just figured it was because I am using a cb made in 1976 and an extremely ghetto antenna set-up that involves the antenna being grounded and hidden behind my back seat. I will be getting a new cobra with weatherband and a new cobra antenna on sunday and I pray i will no longer have this problem. but I do SOMEHOW get a few miles out of my ghetto set-up.

Mine is the Cobra 29 something. Has two different noise cancelling deals. Works pretty good. Bigger speaker than the real basic smaller units. Lights up nice at night too.
