B&M shifter relay problems

Hey all,

Got a 92 RS auto with a B&M shifter.

About six months ago, the car started having intermitant starting issues.

I checked the starter, the battery, ignition relay, ignition switch, and the VATS(security light goes out as it should).

I replaced the neutral safety switch after I believed the relay to be bad. I came to this conclusion because I could jump the blue and green wires on the relay, and the car fired right up. But the new relay didn't help.

If jumping the wires allows the car to start, then what else could it be, but the relay. Please help, this has been going on for 6 months and I have run out of things to replace, and check.

Has to be As a relay has

12+ (trigger?)
ground (trigger?)
output
interupt

So a relay can do many differnet things however none work without a triggered input.

Oh have you metered the two wires you are using to start the car? If you knew the every wire and if it is a positive or negavite it would be super easy.
aybe someone can help!

The Chiltons manual is lacking when it comes to wiring for starting and charging. Too many wires that I don't know what they are. One in particular is the blk/wht connecting to the neutal/safety relay.

The previous owners were maniacs.

yeah if someone could post a diagram I could give you a step by step to trouble shoot it. I have a 92" 350 TPI harness in a box somewhere at my other house but i think it is different than your car.

i dont know if the wires are the same as on my car but i took mine to an auto electician and he wired the two big wires together think they were the yellow and purple. it took care of my starting issue after i did my shifter.you could check on that to see if it works. just from my experience

I appreciate the thought, but that's kinda dangerous. It would allow the car to start out of park or neutral, essentially bypassing the safety alltogether.
If it was just me, I would consider it, but I'm giving this car to my nephew.

Actually, if its a 92, it should be the same console harness for the shifter.

Re: B&M shifter relay problems

i have all the wires hooked up to the switches on the shifter. the yellow and the purple use to run throu the radio shack relay they are part of the starting unit if i understood the explaination i got from my electrician. my car will only start in park or neutral and the backup lights work like they should. i havent had a prob with it since he fixed that little bit for me. this guy deals in just auto electric. definitely have someone look at it thou.

Re: B&M shifter relay problems

if you can meter the purple and the yellow and then get a good pic of the pin side or even better the pin number for the colors you have I can tell you what you are misssing.

However I am thinking you are missing 12+ power to the relay as the shifter switch should be ground and if you are touching it to the other wire and it starts!

1 minute and a meter in my hand and I would know!

Re: B&M shifter relay problems

I found a loose wire on the relay that ground itself out, causing.....a blown fuse.

Now, I checked the fuses once before, but I guess I overlooked one. After going back and reseating all the wires on the relay, and replacing the poped fuse, she fires right up.

I also know what all the wires are for now, after alot of research, so if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

I need to find some kind of connector to use with this relay so this doesn't happen again.

Yeah post up the info if you got it so anyone that finds this has the anwser! I would just go to my shop a grab a Metra pre-wired relay and a bosh relay. Wire it up tape it all for a clean factory look. And sleep good knowing it is good to go.
