Re: toggle switch?

to my knowledge there are no toggle switches provided by GM...it's very likely aftermarket. It's prob for neons or something of that sort, or aftermarket security system. Trace the wires are the only way to figure it out. It's right there because it's close to a power supply, so one of the wires will go to the fuse block...you need to trace the wires going the other way to see where they lead...the previous owner may have already removed w/e it was before selling it to you.

It's a valet switch for an alarm.

Very true.
I also have never heard of having an insurance break for having a toggle switch connected to my fuel pump.?

Ill clarify for you. He said there's an insurance discount if the car has a switch for the starter or fuel pump. I was curious if my switch is for the starter or fuel pump because I have not been able to start the car yet.

ok,so if I were to go out to the garage and hack a couple of wires and add a toggle switch in the mix,I would get cheaper insurance on my car?

Re: toggle switch?

lol, idk, i got no response, and 89RS_82Z, just so you know we're not making fun just so you know we are looking for any potential savings possible . So if you know anything please enlighten us so we can check if it's available. Back to issue at hand. When you turn the key do you hear the fuel pump engage? When you turn the key does your starter turn? If both don't do anything then you got a bigger problem. If that switch has a lead going to the fuse panel then i don't see how it's for starter or fuel pump, and if you get dash lights and the little security light on...have fun with VATS...thats all i'll say about that one, lol.

The insurance companies probabley think of it as an anti theft device.

Re: toggle switch?

Some insurance offer discounts for alarm and disable systems if you are buying comprehensive.

As for this issue, assuming you tried starting the car with the switch both ways, trace out the wiring. It will most likely go to an alarm module under the dash or kick panel.

If the car has an alarm, find the bundle of wires going down the column and carefully pull them apart till you find a fat yellow (or possibly purple) wire. You will know it because it is the biggest one. Somewhere they will probably have cut it and installed something inline. Just join the wire back together to bypass the alarm or starter kill.

I am going to try to start it again maybe tomorrow or sometime this week with a new battery, because the old battery that is on there now is dead. When I hooked it up after I recharged it, the interior lights turn on but the starter struggled and the engine did not turn over. I did not check for the security light. Hopefully it is just the battery.

Re: toggle switch?

It kinda make sense that you could save on insurance. If you got in a wreck, so long as you were still concious you could shut the pump off. Less likely for the car to explode. Course turning the key off does the same thing.
I am going to put one on my ignition, (instant kill), and one on my fuel, (explosion thing). I am only doing this cause I am going to drag race my car. That way you can kill it and still steer.
----------
Side note,
It's also a poor man's theft control.

Re: toggle switch?

yea i been away, sorry guys!!!!!!!!!!

i was told about the idea along time ago, you put a switch inline with the power to the relay for the fuel pump or starter, flip it off when you leave your car......some punk tries to steal it (even with keys) and it wont strat, he i going to say "blank it" and find something else, its like a poor mans VATS system, my neighbor had one on his jeep, what you do is tell your insurance company you have a strater disable, you want the switch in a easy to fip on and off but hard to find area (ie under the dash behind the fuse pannel)

No, what he's (or she's, gotta be PC) gonna do is start digging under the dash for the switch. Now if you place the switch somewhere other than under the dash (as I have) they will still eventually find the wire, but this costs them precious time.

The bottom line is that you cannot stop any car thief. Any skilled thief with an infinite amount of time can steal any car. Their biggest enemy is time. Any system you install (fuel kill, starter kill, alarm, gps, club, whatever) will only slow them down. But for every minute you can slow them down, you increase the likelyhood that they will be noticed and your car will be saved.

Right now I have my starter on kill, I would have put my fuel pump on a kill but I've got a new idea for that. I'm going to try and make a timed kill for the pump. With the switch off current to the pump is routed through a time release switch that flips after 15 seconds, then reverts.

How long do you think they will want to drive in a car that dies every 15 seconds?

yeah,or in your case an anti run device.
Who knows what the previous owner did to your car.
Have you found anything yet on the column as far as alarm wiring?
I have seen alot of crazy ideas for alarms/anti theft gadgets .
So if you haven't got it running yet, lets have some pics and get to the bottom of this.

I have not gotten a chance to take the column apart to check the wiring. Maybe by the end of this week ill take it apart and post up some pics of the wiring and the switch. But I got a bad feeling the reason the car wont start is because of the VATS. I also have another question, my steering wheel moves downward when you pull down on it, why is this? and how do I fix it?

Re: toggle switch?

you shouldn't have to take the column apart to check for alarm wires. They should be visible from just looking under the dash.
Does your car have tilt steering?

it does have tilt steering and at any position i put the steering wheel, it still moves when you pull it. i might check later on for the alarm wires
